Sasuke Uchiha's early childhood, as told over the course of Naruto manga volume twenty-five, was spent living in the shadow of his older brother, Itachi Uchiha, a natural prodigy of the Uchiha clan. In an effort to win some recognition for himself, Sasuke trained diligently to win some of his parents' attention, though he was never able to surpass the milestones set in place by his brother, who would be the only one to acknowledge Sasuke's accomplishments. In time, Itachi began to distance himself from the clan and fell out of his family's confidence, which consequently began to look to Sasuke as the new future for the clan. Soon after Sasuke started to be accepted into his family, he returned home one day to find the streets littered with the corpses of the Uchiha clan. Upon rushing home, Sasuke found Itachi standing over his parents's corpses. As Sasuke tried to flee, Itachi went on to explain that he had never loved his little brother. Claiming that Sasuke was not worth killing, Itachi encouraged him to get stronger by living a life of hate and anger towards him, with his sole purpose being to avenge the clan. Itachi left, and in the absence of a loving family Sasuke agreed to do as instructed, dedicating his life to killing Itachi. Years later, in Part II of the series, Sasuke is shown to have some doubts about the events of that night. It is not until after Itachi's death that he learns the truth surrounding the massacre of the Uchiha: that it was all done on command by the village.

Creation

Sasuke Uchiha is a lead character of the Naruto series that was created by Masashi Kishimoto. It first began serialization Weekly Shonen Jump in November 1999. He was first introduced in the very first story arc. Sasuke was originally not even a planned character for the Naruto series as he was developing the story. After discussion the series future with the editors, Kishimoto was told that the lead protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki, would need a rival to challenge hm. This is what spurred the creation of Sasuke. Kishimoto went on to do intensive research of other manga series about what makes an effective rival. The rival of a hyper-active and dim protagonist should be the polar opposite, so he was sure to make Sasuke a prodigy and never show much emotion. As he put it, a "cool genius".

Kishimoto struggled with Sasuke's design more so that any other character that he had previously worked on for the series. In some early drafts Sasuke appeared to be too matured for a character the same age as Naruto. First after designing the face, he started work on the clothing design. He would add a large number of necklaces and adornments around his legs and arms, but the complexity of these designs would of been far too complex to draw on a weekly basis. He once again looked to Naruto and went in an opposite direction to be minimalist to Naruto's outlandish clothes. Sasuke's first shirt design bares a striking resemblance to a character from the first series Kishimoto ever submitted to Weekly Shonen Jump. The series was titled Karakuri (からくり), but it was canceled since fan polls were rock bottom. Kishimoto struggled throughout the early series to draw Sasuke and retain the youthful appearance. Art mistakes were frequent and he would often look older then intended. He blamed himself for his inexperience in drawing character that were mature beyond their actual age. Sasuke's hair initially started as short but grew as the series progressed. He was given a more complicated outfit during the Chunin Exams, that had a variety of straps on the arms and elbows; but this was again too complicated for the weekly schedule. After the arc, he was returned to his initial design. Despite all the trials in drawing Sasuke, Kishimoto has said that he is his favorite to draw.

He first appeared in Naruto Volume 1, CH. 3 "Enter Sasuke!", and his first anime appearance was in Naruto - Episode 1 "He Appears! Naruto Uzumaki". Though Sasuke's first official appearance in the Naruto manga was in Chapter 3, he can be seen standing in line behind Naruto in Chapter 1 "Uzumaki Naruto" on page 13, and he also appears in the splash page for Chapter 1 riding a hawk. His character in the Japanese series is voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama, and the U.S. dub produced by VIZ Media is done by Yuri Lowenthal. Sasuke has a natural gift in ninjutsu that made him the star of his class.

Sasuke was named after the father of the Third Hokage, Sasuke Sarutobi. Sasuke's family name of Uchiha (うちは) is another way of pronouncing Uchiwa (団扇, "paper fan"). In fact, the Uchiha Clan's symbol is that of a paper fan. These fans are designed for fanning a fire to help it burn. The only people Sasuke uses Japanese honorifics when talking to is his parents and fellow Uchia Clan members. In Japanese culture, this would be seen as incredible rude. In the splash page for Chapter 1 "Uzumaki Naruto", Sasuke is seen riding a hawk, a type of animal his character would eventually learn to summon.

Sasuke has had various places in the fan polls for the Naruto cast, but he has kept a steady place within the top ten on each one. He is one of four characters to to this. This in spite of frequent absences from the story. In the first poll, Sasuke ranked 3rd, in the second and third he placed 4th, in the fourth he placed 3rd again, and would held the 1st place for both the fifth and sixth poll. By the Third Naruto Databook, all of the votes were tallied  for a grand total of 33,632 votes, making him the third most popular character of the manga. In a more recent poll, Sasuke took 2nd place, and these numbers have not yet been added to his total votes.

Sasuke had the highest grades in the Ninja Academy for Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and Genjutsu, but his average was lowered due to his poor scores in cooperation and the second-lowest grade in assertiveness. He was the second highest in grades, behind Ino Yamanaka.

As per Kishimoto's design, Sasuke is a polar opposite to Naruto in almost every fashion. He's coo headed to a point of being nearly emotionless and holds a sense of superiority about himself. Much of his talent comes from heavy training he did while young but still excelled quickly. Growing up, he felt he was under the shadow of his even more talented older brother. After the slaughter of the Uchiha Clan, he blamed himself for being so weak and further threw himself into training since he was now dedicated to revenge. Seeing others such as Sakura or Naruto succeed past him only exposed a feeling of inferiority. It was in a battle against Haku and Zabuza Momochi that Sasuke's Sharingan Eyes first appeared. He even sacrificed himself to save Naruto when it appeared that he was about to die. During the Chunin Exams is when he first met Orochimaru, who was after him to be his new vessel; and placed the Juinjutsu Cursed Seal of Heaven on him. Sasuke survived the curse mark and gained more power from it, but it only fed the darkness inside of him. He was later trained by Kakashi Hatake to use his signature technique, the Chidori. It was during the last stage of the Chunin Exam that the Sand Village and Sound Village invaded the Leaf Village. Sasuke battled Gaara and was easily defeated. He was humiliated to watch as Naruto was the one to show greater skill and defeat Gaara.

This bitterness only grew for Naruto's advancing skill and made him feel he wasn't moving forward fast enough. He challenged Naruto to an all out fight on top of the hospital, and he nearly tried to kill Naruto with the Chidori. This fight was stopped at the last moment by Kakashi. Sasuke was later approached to join Orochimaru by his elite Sound Four, and he accepted. He was put through a special jutsu that would complete his Cursed Seal mark and abandoned the village. Naruto and other Leaf Ninja chased after him and he had a full all out fight with Naruto. This was the first fight he unleashed the Second-Stage Juinjutsu form and the three-tomoe Sharingan awoke in him. Sasuke barely won this fight but didn't chose not to kill Naruto. He then went to Orochimaru for training to kill Itachi for two years. Several characters throughout the story have often mentioned that they find the idea of teaching a genius, such as Sasuke, as boring next to teaching someone more unpredictable, such as Naruto.

Sasuke Uchiha after time skip

After a two year time skip in the manga series, Sasuke is now at the age of 15 or 16 years old. He had spent the entire time being trained by Orochimaru in many of his snake based and other forbidden jutsu. He even mastered the second-stage juinjutsu. His clothes were also modeled after Orochimaru's Sound Ninja and he has a chakra sword of called Kusanagi. Though, this model is a katana style and is a different style than Orochimaru's Kusanagi. After killing Orochimaru, he formed his own team of other Sound Ninja he called Team Snake. He would eventually kill Itachi and was approached by Madara Uchiha. Madara would tell him the whole truth about the story of the Uchiha Massacre and that is was the plot of Danzo Shimura. Sasuke then joined the Akatsuki and rename his squad to Team Hawk. Both his clothes under Orochimaru and Akatsuki bore the Uchiha Clan's symbol on the back. They tried to capture the Jinchuuriki, of the Eight-Tailed Ox, Killer Bee; but failed. These actions lost him the protection of the Fifth Hokage, Tsunade; and he was classified a Rouge Ninja. Sasuke tried to rebel against Madara but this was another failure. His team was then tasked with attacking the Kage Summit in the Land of Iron, and Danzo would be attending. It was his actions here that would instigate the Fourth Great Shinobi War.

Not long after, Sasuke battled Danzo and reached a new level of darkness. Though Danzo held his Team Hawk member, Karin; who was deeply in love with him. He pierced through her to kill Danzo and left her to die, as well. Sakura appears to try and kill Sasuke, and he would of killed her, as well. If Kakashi hadn't appeared at the last moment to save her. It was then that he declared that he would eventually return the Hidden Leaf Village with the intent to kill everyone and wipe the village off the map. To gain more power, Sasuke agreed to have his Sharingan Eyes replaced with his brother Itashi's eyes.

Major Story

Introductory Arc

Sasuke's first appearance in the series is a short section of Part I, where he quickly and easily passes the Ninja Academy graduation test, whereas Naruto could not even create and sustain a working clone for a few seconds. Naruto, after seeing that Sakura Haruno desired Sasuke's affection, decided that the two would from here on out be rivals. Naruto did everything he could to be better than Sasuke, but in the end, regardless of how hard he fought against him, he was eventually placed into the same three man unit as him and Sakura, with Kakashi Hatake, the copy ninja, as their teacher. As much as neither of them liked it, they would eventually have to come to terms with one another and help eachother fight and complete missions together.

Naruto, to prove his straightforward conviction, drove a kunai into his hand at one point during their first real mission, to guard the bridge builder from the land of waves. This mission was supposedly simply a Rank C given to them specifically by the Third Hokage, but it ended up being much more than a simple mission once Zabuza, "The Demon" appeared and attempted to kill them and take the bridge builder. The fight escalated with Kakashi facing off against him in an open area with a large lake, surrounded by misty fog, Zabuza's specialty. Sasuke and team were commanded to guard the bridge builder with their lives while Kakashi fought him and lured him away from them, eventually combatting his opponent in the middle of a lake.

It wasn't too long before the Demon sent one of his water clones to do away with the trio while they attempted to hold their own. Naruto attempted to barrage the assassin's doppelganger with multiple shadow clones of his own, with intent of crushing him, but the Demon's sword skill was too great and he faltered, all of his clones being blown back. Eventually, after leading it out far away enough, Sakura noted that the clone would stop working so well if they were able to get it far away enough from the person controlling it. She was right, and it melded down into water once it had been such a distance. Suddenly, though, from through the midst, Sasuke and Naruto could see that Kakashi had been trapped by one of Zabuza's many water based jutsu, a prison in spherical shape keeping Kakashi pinned down, with Zabuza holding his hand in it. Naruto and Sasuke quickly developed a plan to take out his technique. Sasuke, lifting out a giant shuriken from his bag, held it up, labeling it as a "Demon Wind Shuriken"  technique.

He threw his giant shuriken straight towards Zabuza as hard as he could. Zabuza caught the first thrown projectile, only to realize that in fact there was a second one underneath the shadow of the first. The water demon was forced to unleash his water prism jutsu on Kakashi, and was defeated by the second shuriken, which was actually Naruto in disguise. 

Naruto Shippūden

In Naruto: Shippūden, which takes place two years after the first Naruto series, Sasuke is now sixteen. During this time he has trained under Orochimaru, and his lust for strength is still strong. During his first encounter with Sakura and Naruto he claims that he is willing to give up his body to Orochimaru just to kill Itachi. This would be proven wrong when Sasuke barged into Orochimaru's room and pinned him to the wall.
He then declares to Orochimaru that he is weak and there was nothing more he could teach him, and was prepared to strike the death blow when Orochimaru turned into his true form, a white snake made up of hundreds of smaller white snakes like itself, somewhat of a beast like Hydra. The two fight, with all the snakes on Orochimaru's "body" attacking simultaneously. Sasuke defended himself against the attacks and taunted Orochimaru as he activated his level two Curse Seal. He said "snakes dream of soaring through the sky, but are forever doomed to crawl on their bellies. But you'll get your chance to fly, snake... in the talons of a hawk." Sasuke then slices Orochimaru in three halves, but starts to feel sick. Orochimaru's severed head taunts Sasuke, saying that his snakes have poisoned the air, as he lunges at him trying to take Sasuke's body by bringing them both to something of a dimension "within himself," as Orochimaru put it.
Sasuke began to be consumed by the strange organic-like material within that world, but Sasuke put Orochimaru in a genjutsu and the strange material that was consuming Sasuke instead began to consume Orochimaru... absorbing Orochimaru with his own technique. When Kabuto asked him which one he was, Sasuke put Kabuto in a genjutsu showing him what happened, then said simply "I've taken over." Sasuke then forms a team called Hebi, which means Serpent or Snake, made up of four people including himself. The three other members consisted of other subordinates of Orochimaru from his other hideouts. They were: Suigetsu, Karin, and Juugo. This team was made to kill Itachi. With Hebi, Sasuke traveled to confront Itachi but was intercepted by the Akatsuki member Deidara. Deidara challenged Sasuke and was ultimately defeated by his own clay bomb, "his greatest masterpiece" as he called it. However, the large summon snake Manda was killed in the battle and Sasuke was left wounded. Recently Sasuke has caught up with Itachi.
When he found him Itachi told Sasuke to meet him in the old Uchiha hideout. When Sasuke and his team, Hebi (Snake), made it to the hideout they were confronted by Itachi's Akatsuki partner Kisame. Kisame told Sasuke to go on alone while the other three stay behind. Karin pleaded for Sasuke not to go alone but Sasuke thought this was perfect and went on ahead. Meanwhile Suigetsu and Kisame have decided to battle to pass the time, seeing is how they're both from the Village hidden in the Mist. When Sasuke finally confronted Itachi for their final battle he found Itachi sitting on a throne like chair. Itachi asked Sasuke "What do you see?", in which Sasuke un-fearfully answered "I see you...dead.". The battle began with Itachi finally replying "Let's see how good your eyesight is.". Sasuke used his Chidori Current and pinned Itachi down.
Sasuke told Itachi he had one question left to ask before he kills him. But it was revealed the Itachi was using his signature genjutsu as the Itachi pinned down faded away as a flock of Raven's. Sasuke found the real Itachi still sitting atop the Uchiha throne. Itachi was surprised when Sasuke was actually using a genjutsu aswell as Sasuke's body faded away as a herd of snakes. The real Sasuke was hiding behind the throne.  

He impaled Itachi from behind with his sword. Sasuke then told Itachi once more "Before I kill you, I have one last question.". Sasuke asked Itachi who the third Uchiha survivor was, and Itachi answered "Uchiha Madara". Sasuke wondered how Madara could still be alive if he was a founding father of the Leaf Village. Itachi told him that Madara is very much alive. And that Madara helped Itachi kill the Uchiha clan. Sasuke then revealed that Itachi was using genjutsu and now they may begin they're real fight. But before they did, Itachi revealed that after activating the Mangekyou Sharingan, your eyes slowly begin to go blind, the very price you have to pay for getting the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox. Itachi told Sasuke that Madara Uchiha is the only one in history to ever find out the Sharingan's final secret, and with it he tamed the nine-tailed fox, and used like a pet. 

However this was revealed to be genjutsu. THen Itachi used the Tsukoyomi to tell Sasuke his sinister plan to rip out Sasuke's eyes. Sasuke broke the genjutsu of Tsukoyomi and proceeded to attack and successfully overwhelm Itachi's Grand Fireball justsu, but soon after Itachi uses his Amaterasu flame to attack Sasuke.
Sasuke was able to dodge Amaterasu with a technique of Orochimaru's which uses alot of his chakra. Both being near the end of chakra Sasuke prepares for his final jutsu, "Kirin."
By creating a hot up-draft, Sasuke was able to cause storm clouds to form. Using his chakra, he guided a lightning bolt at Itachi. He thought he defeated Itachi, however Itachi used his last Mangekyou Sharingan technique, Susanoo, a large humanoid to protect himself. Orochimaru starts to whisper to Sasuke, saying that he can help him defeat Itachi. White snakes then appear from Sasuke's body and Orochimaru appears in the form of a gigantic eight-headed snake and attacks Itachi, however Susanoo cuts off each head that attacks him. Orochimaru emerges from the mouth of the last head and is stabbed by Susanoo's sword, which has the power to seal whatever it strikes in a dream-like world. Susanoo starts to absorb Orochimaru and the white snakes from Sasuke's body into a gourd attached to the sword, but one of the snakes escape.
Itachi begins towards Sasuke, but clenches his chest.Sasuke attempts to defend himself with exploding kunais, however they are all deflected by Susanoo's shield. Sasuke gets backed into a corner as Itachi reaches for Sasuke's eyes, but at the last moment changes his finger's path and pokes Sasuke's forehead as he falls to the ground and Susanoo disappears, in a last act of remembrance.

Sasuke then awakens in a darkened bedroom. Tobi first speaks and informs Sasuke that he won, but shouldn't be so careless about his life. He then stepped out of the shadows and tells him that that they met before, but he isn't his enemy. Tobi then starts to take off his mask, stating that he's also a surviving Uchiha. At this point, Sasuke's eye turns into the Itachi's Mangekyou Sharingan and Amaterasu starts to engulf Tobi, he falls back into the shadows screaming. Sasuke is baffled as to what happened, and Tobi steps out of the shadows saying that Itachi gave him his Mangekyou Sharingan, possibly as a last ditch effort to kill him or to keep him away from Sasuke. Tobi makes a joke saying that it could be called a fail-safe, but Itachi only got as far as "fail." He then tells Sasuke that he was the one that helped Itachi destroy the Uchiha clan and called himself Madara, and said that he's going to tell Sasuke about Itachi.
The first few things he said confused Sasuke a lot, as he didn't understand the relevance of what had happened back then to what was happening now. Tobi told him that in order for him to explain the past of Uchiha Itachi, he would have to first explain what had happened a long time ago, back before Konoha had even technically started, back when there were two warring clans, The Uchiha and the Senju clan, who had been warring with eachother ever since anyone could remember. When people hired the Uchiha as bodyguards, their enemy would hire the Senju. The two clans were the strongest in the world, and always fought whenever they were given the chance. Tobi continued to tell him of how he had met his greatest rival, and also the man he had looked up to the most, on these battlefields. This man was known as Hashirama Senju, the man who would later become the first Hokage of the Leaf Village. Madara continued to tell Sasuke that he had been on even terms with the man when it came to fighting, they were almost on equal terms with eachother, but Tobi had lost more than he'd won, and eventually this caused for him to have to give up his position in the clan, as in desperation he asked his little brother for his eyes, as he was going blind. What most people did not know if this story was that in fact, Madara had not taken his brothers eyes away, he had in fact just accepted the offer because he knew that his little brother knew what was best for the clan. But this would eventually cause some controversy among the other members, and he would soon lose rank...
Standing on a bank of a ocean shore Sasuke reflected on what Tobi told him, then in a final decision he informed Tobi, Juugo, Karin, and Suigetsu. That team Hebi (snake) will now move under the name Taka (hawk) also reviling his new Mangekyou Sharingan, and long with the new name came a new goal, to crush Konoha.
But, before he would crush Konoha, Tobi said that he would have to join him with the remainder of the Akatsuki, and so, he did. There current primary goal is to capture the eight tailed biju, who has identified himself as " Killer bee", and acts some what like a stereotypical African-American rapper.

On a Rampage

Sasuke and his team find Killer Bee in the mountains of the Cloud village. Suigetsu and Juugo begin the assault, but are easily defeated. Sasuke confidently steps in but fares no better and is heavily wounded, but saved by the combined efforts of his teammates. Karin heals Sasuke and the team begin their attack again, this time as a team, and are still not doing so well. Killer Bee then uses his Bijuu chakra and attacks Sasuke, whom manages to avoid a tackle and Killer Bee heads towards the others. They escape and Killer Bee goes back for Sasuke, that's when Sasuke manages to hit Killer Bee with Tsukiyomi but he breaks it as the eight-tailed beast was able to disrupt his chakra and dispel the genjutsu.He tackles Sasuke after sasuke lowered his guard, gravely injuring him again. Juugo tries to patch up Sasuke while Killer Bee assumes his Bijuu's form and Suigetsu tries to hold him off for the others to escape with a giant wave, but Killer Bee takes Suigetsu down and Sasuke then prepared to use Amaterasu. Killer Bee began flailing about while on fire, in the process he caught Karin on fire too before he passed out. Sasuke then used his MS again to extinguish the flames on both Killer Bee and Karin, but using his MS too much had caused Sasuke incredible pain. He and Juugo then carried they Killer Bee and their teammates back to their base.
Uknown to Sasuke and his team, they have actually failed to capture the 8-Tails and are returning with a Clone. Carrying the clone without notice as well as their wounded teammates, Sasuke and Jugo traveled to another Akatsuki hideout, where he handed over the clone to Madara. Madara asked him where he intended to go next. Sasuke replied that after healing his injuries, he would go to Konoha. At this, Madara remembered a conversation he had with Sasuke before the latter left to capture the Eight-Tails. Madara was skeptical about Sasuke's stated intention to crush Konoha (which would go against Itachi's wishes) and questioned his motives. At this, Sasuke said that although he wanted to respect Itachi's sacrifice, his feelings of anger and sorrow at Itachi's fate were much greater. He further said that he considered Itachi's life to have been more important than Konoha in the same way Itachi felt about him, and because of that he could never forgive the three Konoha elders for their actions. He then revealed that he had lied when he said he only wanted to kill the three elders and that he instead wanted to destroy the entire village, whom he considered accomplices for going along with the Senju's discrimination of the Uchiha, and for enjoying a temporary "peace" at the cost of Itachi's life and the massacre of the Uchiha clan. Thus, he made it clear that he had no intention of following in Itachi's footsteps, to which Madara remained silent. Madara thought to himself, "In all those who feel love, there lies the capacity for hate".

As his team rested, Suigetsu asked Sasuke if they would really get the power of the Eight-Tails, but Sasuke surmised that he doesn't need it. He then thought to himself that he already has the power to destroy Konoha (with his Mangekyo Sharingan) and reached for a glass of water. Much to his surprise, Sasuke accidentally knocked over the glass. In horror, he realized that his eyesight has gotten hazy. Karin asked him if he is all right, to which Sasuke lies, telling her that nothing was wrong.
Suddenly, Karin sensed an enemy outside their base and Sasuke and Jugo went to intercept him. This enemy turned out to be a spy sent by the Raikage to keep tabs on Hawk's movements. Later, other Cloud ninjas sent by the Raikage arrive, only to find that Team Hawk were gone and the spy (apparently) dead.
Afterwards, it was revealed that Sasuke actually failed in capturing the Eight-Tails, as Killer Bee fooled him into taking a tail of the Eight-Tails disguised as his body, instead of the beast itself.
 
Madara later intercepted Team Hawk whom were off to make their offensive against Konoha. Team Hawk said they were parting with Akatsuki, but Madara told Sasuke that he warned Sasuke that he'd kill him if he betrayed Akatsuki, adding on that the Eight-Tails was a fake. Madara told them that he'll let their failure to capture the Eight-Tails slide and he wants them to do something else before they can leave Akatsuki. Sasuke tried to attack Madara, but failed. Madara told him that there was no point in destroying Konoha since Pein already did it, and told them that the 5 Kages were going to have a meeting... one of them being Danzo, who wanted the Uchiha wiped out. He then had Zetsu lead Team Hawk to the Kage meeting; Zetsu split in two and the light half lead them while the dark half remained with Madara.   
L. Zetsu took them to the Land of Iron, a snow-covered country that had Samurai rather than Ninja. Team Hawk scouted the area and managed to sneak into the Kage meeting where L. Zetsu informed them which one was Danzo. After Team Hawk snuck out, they decided upon a course of action, they'd attack Danzo while he's on his way back to the Leaf village. This however doesn't go according to plan as Madara tells L. Zetsu to tell the Kages that Sasuke's there. L. Zetsu pops up in the middle of the Kage meeting, telling them that Sasuke's hiding somewhere and wants them to go find him. Raikage rushes L.

Sasuke vs. Raikage

Zetsu and threatens to kill him if he doesn't tell them where Sasuke is. Later  Zetsu offers to give him a hint but Raikage apparently kills him out of frustration and runs off with his bodyguards Shii and Darui to look for Sasuke. Raikage does find Sasuke, Sasuke rushes head-on but Darui defends with Water Encampment Wall to force Sasuke back, then uses an electrical attack called Wave of Inspiration to attack, but Sasuke's able to escape. Shii then uses a genjutsu on Sasuke, stunning him while Darui and Raiakge go in to kill Sasuke, but Juugo and Suigetsu save Sasuke... unfortunately Suigetsu's sword is broke in two from Raikage's punch. Juugo uses his full cursed form and Raikage slams him against a wall with a thunderous punch, but Juugo endures it with a shield and fires a large energy blast at Raikage, but he dodges and slam Juugo against another wall which takes him out of the fight. Sasuke tries to attack Raikage from behind, but Raikage knocks Sasuke's sword from his hand. Sasuke then uses Chidori and rushes at Raikage. They charge at each other, Sasuke manages to avoid Raikage's attack and hit him with Chidori, however Raikage is too durable and only Sasuke's fingertips pierce him. Raikage then gives Sasuke a powerbomb, but Sasuke saves himself from any serious damage with Susanoo. Sasuke then tries to use Amaterasu, but Raikage uses Body Flicker to avoid it and goes to attack Sasuke again, Sasuke however uses Amaterasu to cover Susanoo but Raikage ignores it and strikes anyway, thrusting Sasuke into the ground. Raikage is about to deal the finishing blow when Gaara appears and stops him. 
Gaara tries to talk sense to Sasuke, find common ground, but Sasuke refuses to come to an understanding. While this is happening, Raikage severs his arm that's burning from Amaterasu and is being healed by Shii. Sasuke's Susanoo starts to fully form and everyone launches projectiles, but Susanoo swings his sword and causes the building to collapse on them and flees with Karin to find Danzo. As Sasuke enters the Kage's meeting room, Danzo uses the confusion to escape while Ao, one of the Mizukage's bodyguards, tries to catch him. Sasuke is about to chase after, but the Mizukage stops him by using her blood-line limit, lava, to seal the door shut. She then uses her lava again, using the technique Melting Apparition to try to kill Sasuke, but Sasuke once again uses Susanoo to try to protect himself. Mizukage's other bodyguard, Choujiro, attacks and crashes Sasuke through a wall where Mizukage traps him and herself in. She then uses her other blood-line limit, Skilled Mist, to fill the area with acidic vapor which starts to melt Susanoo's bones and Sasuke himself. L.Zetsu however saves Sasuke, he secretly used his Spore technique to drain everyone's chakra and gives it to Sasuke, but he doesn't collect much since everyone escapes from his technique. The Tsuchikage then tries to kill Sasuke with his blood-line limit, Detachment of the Primitive World to obliterate Sasuke. It appears to have worked, but Madara teleports in holding Sasuke. Madara teleports Sasuke and Karin away and begins talking to the Kages.

Later, Madara intercepts Danzo and his bodyguards, Fu and Torune. After a short fight, Madara teleported Danzo's bodyguards away and brought Sasuke and Karin to fight Danzo. Danzo revealed his right arm to be covered in Sharingans which enraged Sasuke even more, Danzo did some handseals and charged at Sasuke but Sasuke protected himself with Susanoo which grabbed Danzo. Sasuke and Danzo talked for a moment and Susanoo crushed Danzo, but Danzo appeared behind Sasuke and used Vacuum Jewel, which Sasuke was barely able to dodge and got hit in the shoulder. Karin noticed that each time Danzo escapes death that one of the eyes on his arm closes. Sasuke summoned a hawk and charged at Danzo, Danzo used Vacuum Wave forcing Sasuke to jump off of his summon to attack; Danzo grabbed Sasuke by the throat, but Sasuke used his sword to kill Danzo. Danzo reappeared unharmed, at which point Sasuke turned into crows and reformed near Danzo as Itachi.  

Susanoo

Itachi used Amaterasu, but it was actually Sasuke's Tsukiyomi and Danzo broke it and paralyzed Sasuke before he could stab him. Danzo placed his paralyzing seal on Sasuke when he grabbed his neck. Karin tried to help Sasuke, but Danzo kicked her away and was about to kill Sasuke when Sasuke used Susanoo to save himself, knocking Danzo away. Sasuke was able to overpower Danzo's seal and was about to use Susanoo's bow & arrow to kill Danzo, but Danzo created a tree to save himself. Susanoo shot another arrow, but Danzo was able to use his jutsu, Izanagi, to resurrect himself again. It's explained that Izanagi blurs reality and illusion, and that for 60 seconds, Danzo is invincible because any injury or death caused will be changed into an illusion; but after which the Sharingan eye can no longer be used. Susanoo shoots another arrow at Danzo but he revives himself and uses Great Vacuum Jewel, but Susanoo blocks it with it's shield/bow. Danzo summons a Baku and it begins to try to suck in Susanoo, Susanoo braces itself though. Danzo appears from behind and blasts Susanoo's back with Vacuum Serial Waves which creates an opening in Susanoo's back and Danzo goes to attack Sasuke, but Sasuke shoots a Grand Fireball at the Baku which makes it gag and Susanoo punches Danzo away. Sasuke's no longer able to sustain Susanoo and it disappears, the two then grab their weapons and attack: Sasuke charges his sword with lightning and Danzo creates a sword of wind, and they stabbed each other.  

Impaled

Danzo had planned on sacrificing the last Sharingan on his arm in order to kill Sasuke, however his last eye had already ran out of time and Sasuke used a genjutsu to trick Danzo into thinking it was still open. Sasuke however was just fatally wounded as Danzo and Karin rushed to heal him, while this was going on Hashirama's D.N.A. was starting to overwhelm Danzo and his right arm grew into a tree, Danzo was able to break himself away before it grew around him; Shisui's Sharingan however was working again and Danzo took off his bandages. Sasuke attacked with Chidori, but Danzo dodged it and grabbed Karin to use her as a shield. Danzo was trying to figure out if he should sacrifice Shisui's Sharingan for Izanagi or use it's mind control in a last-ditch effort to kill Sasuke. Sasuke told Karin not to move and used Chidori Spear, impaling Danzo and Karin. Karin asked why, and Sasuke replied that she became a burden when she was captured. Danzo let Karin's body fall and started to walk away, with Sasuke stalking him, but Madara jumped infront of Danzo and said he'll be taking Shisui's eye. Danzo decided to sacrifice himself to stop Madara and Sasuke instead of trying to survive; he activated the Reverse Four Symbols Seal, creating a vacuum that sucks in everything around him and seals them inside his body. However Madara and Sasuke were able to get to safety. 

Madara took Danzo's body to retrieve Shisui's Sharingan, but before he left he told Sasuke that he should finish off Karin so she couldn't fall into enemy hands in her condition. Sasuke was about to do this when Sakura appeared, offering to ally with Sasuke. He saw it as a chance to replace Karin as his medic, and said that he'd let her join him if she proved her intentions by killing Karin. Sakura walked up to Karin and was thinking about attacking Sasuke instead, however Sasuke was about to kill her from behind with a Chidori; but Kakashi sprung out and saved her. He tried to reason with Sasuke, but Sasuke was infuriated that Konoha was so happy due to Itachi's and his clan's demises aswell as the fact that Kakashi has a Sharingan which should only belong to an Uchiha. In his rage, Sasuke used Susanoo and fired an arrow at Kakashi, but he stopped it with his Kamui- the sight of Kakashi's Mangekyou Sharingan only helped to anger Sasuke and his Susanoo changed forms again to look like Itachi's, however Susanoo disappeared and Sasuke was left nearly completely blind. Sakura ran up on Sasuke and was about to stab him but hesitated and Sasuke was about to stab her in retaliation, but Naruto appeared and saved Sakura from certain death. Seconds from his arrival Naruto begins to sympathize with Sasuke's dark motives however his effort is all in vain as Sasuke simply tells him the pleasure destroying Konoha and gaining revenge will give him. Kakashi advises Naruto that it is useless to try and change Sasuke with his words clearly telling him that Sasuke is a different person now however in order to restrain Kakashi from killing the weakened Sasuke, Naruto has a Shadow Clone lock him in a full nelson. Sasuke takes an opportunity to kill the defenseless Kakashi with a Chidori however in a heartbeat Naruto counters with a Rasengan but he can be seen holding back much of his power in an effort not to kill Sasuke.

As their signature jutsu clash Sasuke coldly tells Naruto that his only options are to kill Sasuke and be forever hailed as a hero in Konoha or die but typically Naruto rejects both options revealing that he has a third option. The resulting clash causes an explosion sending both Naruto and Sasuke flying away from each other and suddenly Zetsu's white half appears from out of nowhere and cushions Sasuke's fall. Madara Uchiha (Tobi) appears beside him preparing to leave but Sasuke quickly asks Madara to wait so that he may hear what Naruto has to say and the clearly matured Naruto says that the two will fight and when they do they will both die together leaving Sasuke enraged who angrily asks Naruto why he cares about him so much and is shocked when he hears Naruto tell him that he is doing so because Sasuke is his friend. Even though he did not anticipate the event, Sasuke assures Naruto that he can tell him whatever he wants he will not change. Before leaving, Naruto tells everyone that the only person Sasuke will fight is him.
      
Soon afterwards Sasuke tells Madara that he wants Itachi's eyes transplanted to him. When Madara askes why the change in heart Sasuke replies that he wanted to fight Naruto with everything he has so he could utterly crush him. After the surgery Sasuke comments that he can feel Itachi's power making him stronger.

Powers & Abilities

Sharingan

Sasuke's Sahringan Eyes

Sasuke has the Sharingan, a kekkei genkai limited to the Uchiha clan. With the sharingan he's able to see chakra to a limited extent, although not to the clarity of Byakugan. He is able to copy taijutsu and ninjutsu using his sharingan, as demonstrated when he copied Rock Lee's taijutsu. However, he is not able to perform to the extent that Rock Lee could and tires more easily as he has not trained as hard as Rock Lee, he also cannot copy other kekkei genkai nor summonings, and cannot copy elements that he cannot use. The Sharingan can cast genjutsu by making eye contact to fool his opponents. It also allows Sasuke to track his opponent by seeing their chakra.

Sasuke's Jutsu

Sasuke's Jutsus include: "Dragon Flame" where he projects a continuous stream of fire from his mouth. "Grand Fireball" where he exhales a gigantic ball of fire. "Mythical Fire Phoenix" where he spits bird-shaped balls of fire from his mouth, which he can also hide shuriken inside for a surprise attack. "Chidori" which covers his hand in piercing electricity. "Curse Seal" which increases Sasuke's physical abilities and chakra. And "Curse Seal lv. 2" which increases Sasuke's abilities farther and gives him wings.

• Great Dragon Fire- Allows Sasuke to project a huge ball of fire shaped like a dragon's head. Chidori Sword, where he covers his sword with the Chidori. 
• Chidori Spear- Creates an electric spike 
• Chidori Current- Electrifies the body.  
• Chidori Senbon-  Throws several electric needles 
• Kirin- Sasuke guides a naturally occurring lightning bolt at his opponent.

Since training with Orochimaru, Sasuke has two summoning seals on his arms which allow him to summon different weapons.After losing Orochimaru's powers, Sasuke obtained the Mangekyou Sharingan.

• Tsukiyomi- Genjutsu in which the user puts his opponent into a dimension where time and space are controlled by the user.   
• Amaterasu- Projects black flames on whatever Sasuke's looking at and can burn through anything, it is stated as being hot as the sun. Sasuke however has great control over Amaterasu, allowing him to shape and move it to his will, this technique is called Kagutsuchi. It was noted that Sasuke may even possess higher skill with Amaterasu than his brother Itachi.
  
• Susanoo- Creates a giant spectral humanoid that surrounds Sasuke and provides him with great offense and defense. 
• Hawk Summoning- Sasuke has gained the ability to summon Hawks after losing Orochimaru. 

After absorbing Orochimaru Sasuke gained Orochimaru's abilities. Sasuke however lost all of these abilities, and the Curse Seal, once Orochimaru was removed from him. 

• Hidden Shadow Snakes-  Multiple snakes appear from his body to attack or bind his opponent.
• Snake Authority Spell-  Gigantic snakes appear from Sasuke's body.
• Molted Skin Substitution- Allows him to escape harm by creating a completely new body without any injuries and leaves his old body behind in his place. "Snake Clone" where he creates a clone out of snakes. 
• Snake Summoning- Summons a variety of snakes to aid him in battle.   
• White Snake Power- Increases Sasuke's recuperative and healing abilities.

Juinjutsu - Cursed Seal of Heaven Forms

Cursed Seal of Heaven

During the Chunin Exam's second stage in the Forest of Death, Sasuke was infected with the Juinjutsu (cursed seal) of Orochimaru in disguise. he did this by biting into Sasuke's neck with fangs to inject it as venom. Orochimaru's developed this technique by experimenting upon one of his followers, Juugo. It worked as both a test of Sasuke's ability to survive the cruse and see if Sasuke could be strong enough to be his next vessel, and it was a seed of darkness that would draw him to Orochimaru later. The seal formed on Sasuke's neck as a three tomoe pattern This is a unique pattern given to the Seal of Heaven. Though Sasuke's was sealed using a special technique, the seal would break and allow him to tap into the corrupting power it holds. Each Juinjutsu has two stages. The first is naturally occurring if the victim survives infection. The second must be specifically honed withing a ritual.

Sasuke's First Stage Cursed Seal First Stage Release The first stage of the curse spreads over the body from the point of the original seal. Though it would cause incredible pain when he would try to use jutsu under this cruse, it also provides increased power by amplifying the amount of charka he could use. He first used this in the Forest of Death against the Sound Ninja that had been tasked to kill him. Though they didn't know they were being used as a test of Sasuke's abilities. With this enhanced chakra, he was able to make short work of these ninja. He would use it again in a fight with Gaara, but he was easily defeated by the power of the Jinchuuriki spirit.

Sasuke's Second Stage Cursed Seal Second Stage Release The second stage of Sasuke's seal first appeared in his battle against Naruto. It was cultivated by the Four Sound Ninja who took him away from the Hidden Leaf Village. He was put into a large sealed barrel where the seal was completed. The second stage completely envelopes Sasuke's entire body and takes on a more demonic form. This layer acts as an incredibly strong armor and allows for even greater chakra output that the First Stage release. The outer layer is a brown color and his hair changes to gray. Two large hand shaped wings protrude from his back that allow him to fly.

Anime

 In the Naruto anime produced by Studio Pierrot, Sasuke's initial appearance is slightly earlier than his original story appearance from the manga. She is among the class as Naruto and everyone else is forced to retake the Transformation Jutsu in Episode 1. Though, this is actually closer to what appears to be Sasuke in the original manga in Chapter 1, Page 13. He did not appear in Naruto Episode 2 "My Name is Konohamaru", and had his first canon anime appearance in Naruto Episode 3 "Sasuke and Sakura: Friend or Foes?".

In Episode 3, Naruto is purposely trying to instigate a confrontation by standing on Sasuke's desk and getting in his face. The person in the seat directly in front of them stands suddenly to see what's going on and accidentally knocks into Naruto. This pushes Naruto forward, and he ends up falling and kissing Sasuke. In the English dub produced by VIZ Media, the kissing scene was cut away from to show Sakura's reaction only.

Films

Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (2004)

Though Sasuke is one of the earliest appearing characters in the Naruto series, he has only appeared in a small handful of the anime movies. His first movei appearance was in the very first Naruto movie, Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (2004). None of the events in this movie held any canon to the original manga story. Despite several more movies based on Naruto, these were all set after Sasuke's departure to Orochimaru; and he did not appear in any of them. He wouldn't have another movie appearance until the second Naruto Shippuden movie, Naruto Shippuden 2: Bonds (2008).

Games

As a lead character of the Naruto series, Sasuke has appeared in some form in video game franchise of Naruto. His first game appearance was in the fighter for the Nintendo GameCube Naruto: Clash of Ninja(2003). This game was eventually released in the U.S. in March 2006. Though he was a playable character, the Games Story mode only allowed users to use Naruto. He would go on to have numerous other appearances in the game series.

Tsunade

Origin

Tsunade was born and raised in the Hidden Leaf Village as the grand daughter of the village founder, the First Hokage making her also the grandniece of the    

Tsunade In Her Youth          

Second Hokage. She grew up to become a powerful ninja and an expert in Medical Justu, as a member of the Three Sannin; but terrible luck in gambling. She did so by being the student of the Third Hokage, allong with Orochimaru and Jiraiya, the other two Sannin members. After she grew up a bit, she and the other two were major factors in the Second Shinobi World War, mostly due to the Sannin fighting Hanzo, the person that gave them there world-wide known name. While they were traveling through the Land Hidden in the Rain they encountered three orphan children. Jiraiya was inspired to train them, Orochimaru wanted to kill them, and Tsunade wanted nothing to do with them, and wished to move on with there plans. Soon after, she would lose both her little brother and her lover. This brought her in a time of great grief and sorrow, as well as she lost hope in the name Hokage because both her lover and her brother wanted to become Hokage, and both times she gave them the crystal necklace that was hers, only to be returned both times. With all emotions raging wild, Tsunade fled from the Konoha and took her lover's niece with her, soon to become her apprentice Shizune. She would overcome this trauma to be the Fifth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village to protect the land and it's people.

Creation

Naruto Vol. 18 JPN (2003)

Tsunade is a lead charcater of the Naruto series that was created by Masashi Kishimoto. She was introduced after the invasion of the Hidden Leaf Village by Orochimaru with the Sand Village forces and the death of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Her lineage dates back to the creation of the Hidden Leaf Village as the grand daughter of the First Hokage and the niece of the Second Hokage. This made her the first choice to take on the title of the Fifth Hokage. She has long blond hair she pulls into duel pigtails, a gray top she keeps wide open in the front to expose her very ample bosom, open toed sandals, a green cloak with the 賭 (kake) kanji that means "gamble", and a diamond shaped seal on her forehead. Her name comes from the Japanese folktale of "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya" (児雷也豪 傑物語, Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari). Though named directly after the character Tsunade, the personalities are drastically different and her name sake was Jiraiya's wife.
 
She first appeared in Naruto Volume 16, CH. 139 "Eulogy!!", and her first anime appearance was in Naruto - Episode 83 "Jiraiya: Naruto's Potential Disaster!". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Masako Katsuki for the adult role, but for the scenes of Tsunade as a child is voiced by Haruhi Terada. She was later drawn on on the cover of Naruto Volume 18. The U.S. dub produced by VIZ Media is done by Debi Mae West for the adult role, but for the scenes of her childhood is voiced by Megan Hollingshead . Tsunade is one of the most powerful all-around ninjas to be produced from the village, and is said her power matches her beauty. Her main skills are in the medical fields of ninjutsu.

She is a member of the Three Sannin ninja along with her former squad members, Jiraiya and Orochimaru. They were all the pupils of Hiruzen Sarutobi. Tsunade is a woman who loves to gamble, but is infamous in her bad luck. She frequently loses and was in serious debt when she was approached as the choice of the next Hokage. Whenever she has won in gambling, death of someone soon follows. Her assistant, Shizune, is the niece of her dead lover and she has a pet pig named TonTon. Her character's linage to the founding of the village has earned her honorific of "Hime", meaning "princess".

Character Evolution

Tsunade the Fifth Hokage

The evolution of Tsunade's character has primarily been in personality and additive, but in flashbacks her appearances as a young girl has been shown. Though in the maid story she is actually in her 60s, she uses a special transformation jutsu that keeps her body looking young. As a child she was flat chested but grew up to be a well endowed woman with a bust exceeding 106cm. To date, her character's true appearance has only been hinted at and never been completely seen. She has changed back twice in Naruto after releasing the special Yani Seal upon her forehead, but changes back after rest. Her curvaceous body has been a source of various fanservice scenes.

Other than her incredible skill in medical justu, she is equally powerful in taiustu. By focusing her chakra into a single point of her attack. It gives her incredibly destructive ability and could crush a stone wall with a single strike. Her strength has earned the description of being monstrous.

After suffering the trauma of the death of her younger brother, Nawaki; and later her lover, Dan, during the Third Ninja War, she developed a crippling phobia of blood called Hemophobia. She would leave the Hidden Leaf Village to wander with her apprentice, Shizune. She left her life behind her, but was later approached by Jiraiya with Naruto that she was selected as the next Hokage. Though originally uninterested, it was through meeting Naruto, who shared the same dream of her lover Dan and brother, that she would accept the duty of protecting the village and it's people. Despite taking the role of Hokage, she was been just as lazy as she's ever been and tries to avoid tedious paper working, leaving that to Shizune.

Tsunade after time skip

After the two year time skip in Naruto, Tsunade has had her image carved into the village's landmark mountain and put forth changes to the ninja teams she had been pushing for long before she originally left. That was to assign each ninja team with a ninja trained in medical jutsu to improve survivability among the squads. She also accepted Sakura Haruno as her apprentice and taught her brother medical justu and the ability to control her chakra in combat.

Recently

The Fourth Ninja War has erupted across the lands as Madara Uchiha has tapped the talents of Kabuto that he acquired from Orochimaru to revive and control the dead as puppets to create an army of the greatest dead ninjas in history. Tsunade is left wondering if her lover Dan is among this massive army.

Major Story Arcs

Tsunade was winning alot of money in the casino she was at. She had a bad feeling because she was winning so much so she left. The next day she ran into Orochimaru preparing to make a deal. He would give back Tsunade's brother and

her lover if she fixed his arms. Tsunade was considering on wht she would do. But Shizune was begging her not to take the deal because her brother and Shizune's uncle would like it. Then Tsunade poisened Jiraiya when they had dinner. The next day Tsunade went to meet Orochimaru and she refused. After Naruto and Jiraiya found Tsunade they all had dinner together and Jiraiya asked Tsunade if she would be the next Hokage because her Grandfather was the first and the founder of the leaf village. Naruto went crazy saying that he was supposed to be the next hokage. Jiraiya told him that he still had a long way to go and the village needed a new leader. Tsunade politely refused. Then she asked why would anyone want to give their life for someone else. Naruto yelled at her and Tsunade challenged him to a fight.

The Fight

When her and Naruto were both outside Tsunade lifted one finger and said this is all I need. After she said that Jiraiya told her not to show off. When Tsunade said come and get me Naruto pulled out a kunai and ran towards her. When he came arms lentgh, she plucked him. This pluck took off his headband and knocked the kunai out of his hand. He went flying into the air and when he landed his headband and kunai landed right beside him. He was stunned by her strength for a second but when he recoved he got back up. When he got back up he tried to do Rasengan on her. Tsunade was suprised that Naruto was trying the fourth Hokage's jutsu. Naruto failed to finish the jutsu and Tsunade looked like she was no longer surprised but mad. She started to yell at Jiraiya and ask why he taught him the Rasengan when he knew that only he and the fourth could complete that jutsu.

The Bet

After Tsunade said that Naruto could not do the Rasengan he told her he could perfect in a week. Tsunade took this as a bet and she said "Ok, what's in it for me?". Naruto said "If I can't perfect the Rasengan in a week, then we won't bug you anymore about why you're not going to be hokage. If I can perfect the Rasengan in a week, then I want that Necklace you have around your neck".

The Necklace of Death

When Naruto said this, Tsunade's eyes went wide and she remembered the first time she gave the necklace to someone. The first person she gave the necklace to was Shizune's uncle. Tsunade loved Shizune's uncle and when she ave him the necklace was the day before he went to war. That night, he died in battle. Tsunade was grief stricken. The second time she gave the necklace to someone it would be her little brother as a birthday gift. The day he also went to battle even though Tsunade told him not to and that it was to dangerous. The next day I was dead. The paramedics told her his body was so twisted up that you couldent even tell who it was.
The truth is, that Tsunade is actually as old as Jiraiya but she uses her chakra to help herself look younger. One of her main fears is growing old.

Powers and Abilities

Using precise chakra control, Tsunade is able to focus chakra into her fist and feet and release it when she punches or kicks that gives her massive strength, enough to split the ground in two with just her finger. This is actually a type of Medical Ninjutsu, and further shows Tsunade's near perfect chakra control. Even though it has been rarely shown from her, we can assume she has excellent skills in repelling genjutsu's as well. We can presume this with much belief because one of the way's to break out of a genjutsu according to Jiraiya is to either stop the flow of one's chakra, or reverse the flow, and with as fine control of chakra as Tsunade, it should be quite and easy task for her. This can repel a genjutsu because genjutsu itself is when a ninja tampers with another ninja's chakra system and flow.

Yin Seal

There is diamond-shaped mark on Tsunade's head which is part of a hidden seal that covers some of her body, she uses this "Secret Mark Seal" to store chakra in and is able to use that chakra when needed. She'll use this in junction with "Creation Rebirth," a technique which speeds up cellular creation and regeneration to heal her body, rendering her almost immortal on the battlefield. But this happens at a cost though since this shortens her life span each time she uses it. She also has an electrical technique called "Important Body Points Disturbance." With this technique she sends an electrical current through her opponent's body by touching them. This doesn't physically harm the opponent, however the brain and body coordinates it's motor functions through electrical pulses, thus Tsunade's technique disrupts those pulses causing the opponent's body to react differently than they want it to.
Being a medical specialist, Tsunade's able to use techniques such as: "Mystical Hand" where she focuses chakra in her hand that speeds up the healing process of wounds, for herself or others. "Chakra Scalpel" where she focuses chakra around her hand which acts as a blade. Since it's composed of energy, it is completely sterile. And "Poison Extraction" where she uses her chakra to remove poison from one's body. She also is strong enough to use the Forbidden Medical Ninjutsu: "Total Life Sacrifice": where she gives the other person undergoing this, their chakra, total strength, and life force. She is one of the most powerful Kunoichi, and one of the most powerful Medic-Nins in the Naruto universe.
Tsunade also continually uses a transformation jutsu to keep her looking young. She is also capable of summoning giant slugs which are capable of spitting acid.

In the original anime airing of the Naruto series published by VIZ Media, much of the fanservice scenes from completely cut from the TV airing. The closeup of Tsunade's breasts when Naruto first meets her was removed, and the scene of Kohohamaru running face first into her cleavage and pausing there was also cut. In the flashback of her youth with Jiraiya, his mocking her for being flat chested was changed.

Sakura Haruno

Sakura was born and raised in the Village Hidden in the Leaves in the Land of Fire. Her parents are shopkeepers, but she entered the Ninja Academy to train to be a ninja of the village. At the academy, she was ruthlessly teased by the other girls in her glass for the size of her forehead. This drove her to try and cover her forehead with her hair but this only made her insecurities easier to target by the bullies in the class. The person who came to her rescue was Ino Yamanaka. Ino defended Sakura and told her to embrace her her forehead. She took a bow and pulled Sakura's hair up and out. The two became incredible close friends and Sakura came out of her shell to be more confident and assertive. This friendship began to fracture when one day Sakura told Ino that the boy she was interested in was Sasuke Uchiha. Not only was he the star of the class but also the boy Ino liked. In a short period of time, they went from friends to bitter rivals. Each even grew their hair out just on a rumor that Sasuke liked girls with long hair. Ino mocked Sakura for her forehead, and she would call Ino a pig (inoko). They were now in constant competition with each other over a boy who hardly noticed either of them. Though they were separate, Sakura was still wearing the ribbon Ino gave her in her hair.

Creation

Sakura Haruno is a lead character of the Naruto series that was created by Masashi Kishimoto. It first began serialization Weekly Shonen Jump in November 1999. He was first introduced in the very first story arc. Despite Sakura's popularity, she was not intended to be the heroine of the series. He blames himself for this by describing himself being unable to draw a good heroine character type. The best he came up with for Sakura is a girl who couldn't understand men, who is an irritating character but always well intentioned. Still, he became quite fond of Sakura and feels much of her personality can be found in just about everyone. This is possibly one explanation as to why she is so relatable to most readers. In an interview with Kishimoto for Weekly Shonen Jump of June 2006, he said that she was the closest to being a normal person and would make the best ninja instructor of the Team 7 members. He also blamed his own lack of experience for not being able to draw her as looking "cute". Even his staff agreed she was "far from cute". He does imply that he felt she became cuter as the series went on and his skills improved. Her most prominent feature is her large forehead. He would occasionally overcompensate and draw it too large. In a 2010 interview, he said that he felt Hinata Hyuga would be a better fit as the heroine of the series, but would strive to give Sakura more heroic scenes in the future.

Masashi Kishimoto - "Naruto" Volume 3 Early Character Designs - Sakura

While designing Sakura, Kishimoto first concentrated on her silhouette and wanted her costume to be as simple as possible. This wasn't the case for the other male leads who were given more complicated designs. So much so that he was concerned about being able to draw the series every week. Shorts were added to her Chinese style of dress to give her a feel of being more active. The first design had them as long as past her knees but were brought up higher to mid-thigh. These became tighter and shorter as the series progressed. For her redesign after the two year time skip, Kishimoto wanted to give her a costume that reflected a more karate background that kept a Chinese design to keep a feminine feel. This is seen in her top.
She first appeared in Naruto Volume 1, CH. 3 "Enter Sasuke!", and her first anime appearance was in Naruto - Episode 1 "He Appears! Naruto Uzumaki". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Chie Nakamura, and the U.S. dub produced by VIZ Media is done by Kate Higgins.
Sakura was given pink hair to have her a unique look for the series and look like cherry blossoms, for which she's named after. Her family name of Haruno (春野) means "spring field", and her given name of Sakura サクラ comes from the Japanese cherry blossom (桜, sakura), the national flower of Japan. When put together, her full name Haruno Sakura can mean "spring field of cherry blossoms". The sash of her forehead protector, boots, and shorts were nearly always color teal. She is also colored with painted nails and pink eyeshadow. For the anime, her accessories are all painted as a standard blue and is never shown to wear any cosmetics. The second season Naruto Shippuden anime accurately follows the color scheme used in the manga. Sakura has had various places in the fan polls for the Naruto cast. In the first poll she ranked 5th, the second she fell to 14th, the third she reached 9th, the fourth she ranked 10th, in the fifth she ranked 8th, in the sixth she ranked 12, seventh she ranked 6th with 9,701 votes, and in the eighth poll she tied for 12th with Sai. Sakura is the only member of Team 7 who's parents have never been shown, but her mother has been heard talking but never seen.

Sakura has had some of the most dramatic growth of the series. Her infatuation with Sasuke was the reason her childhood friendship with Ino Yamanaka fell apart. They both grew their hair out long because they had heard a rumor that Sasuke liked girls with long hair. She tried to play the sweet and innocent young girl, but often times her inner thoughts are exposed in the series through what is called the "Inner Sakura". It shows that she's far more aggressive than the face she shows to the public and enjoys immature activities, such as pranks. Though, she was open in her hatred for Naruto. She always felt that she was being left behind in her squad since Sasuke was already so skilled and Naruto was showing constant improvement. Her over indulgence superficial issues, such as her hair care, nearly got her and her team killed during the Chunin Exams. Tired of always being the victim in need of being saved, she used her own kunai to slice her off so she could fight so she could finally be the one to save her friends. She battled Ino for the second potion of the Chunin Exams, and though they both lost. It allowed them to work out their issues that would allow they to revive their once shattered friendship.

After the invasion of the Hidden Leaf Village, Sakura was surprised to learn that is was Naruto and not Sasuke who saved her from Gaara. Her opinion of Naruto slowly began to rise, but Sasuke began to move further away emotionally. She tried to stop Naruto from fighting and jumped into the middle of it. She could of been killed if it wasn't for Kakashi Hatake ending the fight. Later that night, she ran into Sasuke who was leaving the village to go to Orochimaru. At first she tried to get him to stay but when that failed she pleaded him to take her with him. She confessed her love, but he still ignored her. When she threatened to scream, he moved behind her, thanked her, then knocked her unconscious. Shikamaru refused to allow Sakura to join the retrieval team, and in tears she begged Naruto to bring Sasuke back. This attempted failed and Naruto was nearly killed. When Naruto left to go train with Jiraiya, Sakura turned to the Fifth Hokage, Tsunade, to be trained by her so she could help Naruto on his return. Next time, she could help bring Sasuke back.

Sakura Haruno after time skip

After a two year time skip in the manga series, Sakura is now at the age of 15 or 16 years old and reached the rank of Chunin. She was trained in all the skills and techniques of Tsunade and even has the same level of monstrous strength. No longer would she be playing the support role and was now a force to be feared in hand-to-hand combat. When Naruto returned, their first mission together was to save Gaara from the Akatsuki. She saved Gaara's brother Kankuro from poison, and she defeated Sasori of the Akatsuki with the assistance of Chiyo. They eventually found Sasuke and she got her first look at the powers of the Nine-tailed Fox sealed within Naruto. After Sasuke escaped with Orochimaru, Sakura spent most of her time back at the Leaf Village after they returned. She was shocked to later learn that Sasuke had joined the Akatsuki and was classified as a Rouge Ninja.
Sasuke's new member team member, Sai, would question her about what she was doing to Naruto with the promise he made to her to get Sasuke back. With this in mind, she made a resolution that she shared with the rest of her friends. First she met with Naruto and confessed to him that she was in love with him and had given up on Sasuke. When this failed to get Naruto to return, she left in search of Sasuke so she could kill him herself. He got the best of her and was ready to kill her, but she was saved at the last moment by Kakashi, who was told what she was attempting. Sasuke told them both he intended to return to the Leaf Village to kill everyone. Saukra took part in the Fourth Great Shinobi War that broke out on the side of the Ninja Alliance against the Akatsuki. It's unknown if Sakura's confession of love was her honest feelings or just a ploy to get Naruto to stop chasing after Sasuke for her.

Major Story Arcs

Unlike her teammates Naruto and Sasuke, Sakura grew up in a normal childhood with loving parents. She lived in Konoha village with her parents and began attending the ninja academy. The kids used to bully Sakura for her large forehead, and when she began covering them, they took advantage of her sensitivity about it and teased her even more. Soon after, Sakura would befriend Ino Yamanaka. Ino gave Sakura a ribbon to help show off her face more. Thanks to Ino, Sakura became more social and developed her own personality. Sakura and Ino became best friends throughout the academy. However, their friendship would take a turn when a boy named Sasuke Uchiha arrived at the academy. Sakura developed a crush on Sasuke, but would learn that Ino also had a crush on Sasuke. Their friendship ended and they became rivals. It was later revealed that the true reason for their strained relationship was that Sakura felt that she was only living in Ino's shadow and decided to become Ino's rival in order to step out on her own.
Sakura is a very intellectual girl and has shown interest in normal test taking. Her stamina and talent as a ninja were below average, which means she was near useless in battle, though useful for analyses.
Eventually it would be graduation day, but first all the students must take a pass or fail test. They would have to demonstrate their ability to make a chakra clone of themselves, to which Sakura does and passes. She is now a Genin (lowest ninja rank) and would soon learn who her two teammates are. The next day, on her way to school she runs into Ino. The two immediately made it a competition to get to school faster. Sakura and Ino both wanted to be on Sasuke’s team, but only Sakura would be lucky enough. However, her other teammate was Naruto, who had a crush on Sakura. Sakura was now a part of Team 7, with Naruto and Sasuke, and their leader was Kakashi. The team learns of a pass or fail survival test that Kakashi is going to administer. Kakashi briefs the team about it and tells them that it will not be easy. The next day, they arrive at the training location with their ninja gear ready to go. However, Kakashi deliberately arrives hours late, and tells them that he “crossed a black cat and had to take a detour. Kakashi shows them two bells and tells them that both only two, one, or none of them are going to pass, and the failure will return to the academy. When the test begins, Sakura showed more interest in following Sasuke around and ignore Naruto, despite him being in trouble. After this, Sakura was lectured by Kakashi for not helping Naruto, and she finally realized how serious this test was. Kakashi then ties Naruto up and gives Sakura and Sasuke food to eat. He then threatens them that if they allow Naruto to eat, they will fail immediately. However, Sasuke and Sakura defy Kakashi’s words and feed Naruto anyway. Kakshi shows up extremely angry and demands an explanation, Sakura tells Kakashi that they fed him because he was their teammate. Kakashi then reveals that they are the first team to pass his test, and now the team is ready for missions.

First Mission! Land of the Waves

Team 7 is assigned to protect a bridge builder named Tazuna, however their mission becomes a Class A ranked mission when they discover that a high ranked ninja was after him. Sakura suggested that they abandon the mission because it is ranked A and Naruto’s hand was injured. However, Naruto takes the kunai out of his hand and it begun healing rapidly. They decide to proceed with the mission anyways. Team 7 would run into a Hidden Mist village ninja named Zabuza. They discover that he is extremely powerful and they prepare before the confrontation. Sakura, due to her lack in ninja skills, was charged with protecting Tazuna, while the others fight Zabuza. However, Sakura would eventually head to the battlefield herself, where she discovers that she has amazing control over her own chakra. When Sasuke was appeared to have died in the battle, Sakura violates Shinobi Rule #25, by crying when Sasuke “died,” which states that a shinobi may never display any kind of emotion in the battlefield. Sasuke would eventually be revealed to not have really been dead, and Team 7 would accomplish their mission by defeating Zabuza.

Chunin Exams

Upon returning to Konoha, they arrive just in time to register and take the Chunin Exams. The exams are used to promote Genin from all hidden villages to Chunin rankings. The first part of the exam was written, which is good for Sakura but bad for Naruto. However, during the exam they realize that Naruto will not be able to pass without cheating, however Sakura is unable to help Naruto with his exam. In the last part of the written exam, the test proctor threatens that in the next part, if one does not pass it they will not be able to become a Chunin for an extremely long time. Sakura begun thinking that Naruto will not be able to pass it and was about to volunteer Team 7 to leave the exam, when Naruto stands up and shows that he is not afraid of the next part. Afterwards, the proctor reveals they were testing their dedication to a mission, and all those who stayed passed the test no matter what the exam score was.
The second part of the Chunin Exams was a survival test. Each team was given a scroll to protect, and the team must steal more scrolls and take it to the middle of the arena. Team 7 is first attacked by Orochimaru, to which Naruto and Sasuke were able to fend off. However, both of them were rendered unconscious during the fight and Sakura was left to care for them until they wake up. Unfortunately, Genins from the Sound village were ordered by Orochimaru to finish off Team 7. Sakura tries her best to protect her unconscious teammates. Rock Lee would come in to save Sakura, but was defeated any way by the Sound Genins. One of the Sound Genins named Kin Tsuchi (female Genin) grabs Sakura’s hair and taunts her for her weakness, claiming that she would rather look pretty instead of training her ninja skills. Sakura in turn, cuts off her own hair and matures during the process. Sakura continued to try and defend her team, until Ino and her team realized that Sakura was in trouble. Despite the rivalry between Sakura and Ino, Ino realized that they were once best friends and decided to jump in and help them out.
An unconscious Sasuke re-awakened during the fight after receiving Orochimaru's cursed seal, and proceeded to ask Sakura who injured her. Quickly overcome by his new cursed mark, he begins a violent rampage on the sound nins who are present. Frightened by his new behaviour, a tearful Sakura rushes to his side and wraps her arms around him, begging him to stop. Her tearful words and embrace get through to him, and his cursed seal quickly recedes.
Team 7 would be allowed to rest while Ino and her team watch their backs. When they fully recover, the team heads toward the middle and meets a fellow Konoha Genin named Kabuto. The four help each other to reach the middle of the arena and are successful.
Reaching the middle allows them to proceed in the exam. The next part of the exam were the preliminary matches. Sakura was forced to battle Ino first, but the two accepted their fate. Sakura and Ino go down to the battle area and insult each other face to face. Ino cuts her hair claiming to follow what Sakura did earlier, however Ino had placed her own chakra in the cut hair. When Sakura came near the hair that were on the floor, Ino was able to use her chakra and pin Sakura into one place. Ino was able to use her Mind Body Swap technique easily. Ino appeared to be the victor as she was going to force Sakura to forfeit. However, Sakura was strong enough to resist Ino’s technique and force Ino out her of own body. The two of them were both exhausted, and would charge each other for the final blow. Sakura and Ino both strike each other’s face simultaneously, and the two were knocked out at the same time. The final decision of the match was declared a draw, and both were disqualified from the exams. When Sakura and Ino recovered, they reconciled their friendship.
The third part of the Chunin Exams was a tournament from those that passed the second part of the exams. Naruto and Sasuke both advanced to this round, and Sakura, who was disqualified, was forced to sit and watch the rest of the exam. However, the Chunin Exams would be interrupted shortly after Sasuke’s fight versus Gaara began by an invasion of Konoha. Many of the ninjas were forced into sleep by a genjutsu, and Sakura was one of the few qualified Genin to repel the genjutsu, as she was a genjutsu type. Kakashi then assigned Sakura to wake up Naruto and go after Sasuke. When the two of them catches up to Sasuke, they discover him fighting Gaara in a monster form.
Upon catching up with Sasuke, Sakura protects him from Gaara's attacks, though Gaara uses his sand to immobilize her. As the sand slowly suffocates Sakura, Naruto fights to defeat Gaara, determined to save her. He succeeds, and Sakura is freed.
After the funeral for the Third, Konoha is forced to search for a new Hokage. They first elect Jiraiya (One of the Legendaries and a student of the Third), but he declines and tells them that he knows someone that is better fit for the job. Jiraiya takes Naruto to go look for Tsunade, who is also one of the Legendaries along with Jiraya and Orochimaru. Eventually Tsunade would take over the Hokage position and Team 7 does a few missions.

Sasuke’s Betrayal

Sasuke would eventually be seduced by the amount of power he can gain from Orochimaru, and after his fight with Naruto, believed that he was too weak himself.
Sakura, knowing that Sasuke would leave, met him near the exit. Sakura did what she could to stop Sasuke from leaving, even tearfully confessing her love.
Though she did everything she could,even offering to go with him, she ultimately could not convince him to stay. Before she could alert anybody of his actions by screaming, Sasuke knocked her out, but not before thanking her for everything.
The next day, Naruto promises Sakura that he will bring Sasuke home. Sakura begins to understand that Naruto was truly a good friend that she had taken for granted after his promise to bring Sasuke home.
Sakura stayed behind on the mission, while Naruto teamed with Shikamaru, Kiba, Neji, and Choji. However, the team would be severely wounded during the mission, one by one each of them had to stay behind so the others could advance. Eventually Naruto would confront Sasuke and battle him. However, Naruto would lose the fight and Sasuke was able to get away. After Naruto was hospitalized, he apologizes to Sakura and tells her that he will bring him back next time.
However, Sakura replies that she would be going with him next time. After seeing Naruto’s determination to get Sasuke back, Sakura became determined to becoming stronger. At first she seemed lost, but son came to the conclusion that as with the rest of her team, she would seek out the last sannin for training. She seek out Tsunade and appeals to her, Tsunade realised that was was happening to the rest of team seven bore remarkable similarity to what had happened to her team. Believing in fate, she would agree to accept Sakura as her pupil.. on the condition that she endured her harsh training.

Two Years Later

In the second part of the Naruto series, two years have gone by. Naruto has returned to Konoha from his training with Jiraiya, and Sakura has become an excellent ninja under Tsunade’s training. Sakura has matured greatly during her two years of training, and she has become more confident in herself. Despite the time spent apart from Naruto, she is shown to care for him more now, especially since he has matured also and is no longer the little trouble maker when they first met. Sakura’s feelings for Sasuke have also not changed. Though she is no longer a fangirl and is mature about it. Whether she has retained her feelings for Sasuke completely has yet to be seen, but considering that Naruto's strong feelings have been retained, it's safe to say that her feelings have remained largely unchanged, considering that she has shown to be very touchy about Sasuke and had assaulted a team member who badmouthed him.
Sakura’s skills as a ninja have greatly increased under Tsunade’s training. She has grown the monsterous strength similar to Tsunade and has become a greatly skilled Medic-nin similar to Tsunade. Her reaction and reflexes has also increased during her training, and all contribute to her survival ability during battle.
With Naruto back in town and reunited with Sakura, they hang out with each other to catch up. Naruto discovers that many of his friends, including Sakura, had already passed the Chunin Exam and are Chunin ninjas now. Naruto was now the only member in their class to still be a Genin. They would receive a mission shortly after when Gaara (The new Kazekage) was kidnapped by the Akatsuki. Team 7, consisting of Sakura, Naruto, and Kakashi are sent to the Wind village where they discover that Kankuro had been poisoned by one of the Akatsuki named Sasori. Sakura displays her medical skills when she was able to cure Kankuro from the poison. Sakura even gained praise from Chiyo (One of the Wind Village Elders) about her skills learned from Tsunade. Afterwards, Team 7, accompanied by Chiyo, goes after Gaara and the Akatsuki. Sakura and Chiyo battle Sasori while Naruto and Kakashi went after his partner. The battle against Sasori proves to be intense. Despite fighting at full strength, Sakura could not bring Sasori and his puppets down. Sasori would attempt to stab Chiyo with a puppet and kill her, but Sakura jumps in between and takes the hit. Chiyo took advantage and stabs in the heart. Sasori reveals that he was going to meet a spy from Orochimaru’s group in a week. Chiyo was able to heal Sakura and she recovers.
Kakashi had been badly wounded during the mission and was forced to be hospitalized after they returned to Konoha. Naruto and Sakura would gain a new leader and teammate for their next missions. Yamato was assigned as the team leader and Sai was assigned as their third teammate. Sai is a strange boy, who grew up without learning any emotions. The team is briefed about their next mission, they were to meet the “spy” in Orochimaru’s group. The new team sets out and discovers that the spy was waiting for the dead Sasori. However, it turns out to be a trap and the group battles Kabuto and Orochimaru. Naruto was left badly injured, but Sakura was able to heal his wounds. They then proceeded to Orochimaru’s hideout, and began infiltrating his lair. Going to room after room looking for Sasuke, they eventually confront Sasuke outside of the lair. They try to convince Sasuke to return to Konoha, but he declines once again and begins attacking them. Sakura tries to stop Sasuke, even attacking him. However, Sasuke was able to escape anyways. The team returns to Konoha after the failed mission, Naruto and Sakura were deeply depressed that they once again could not stop Sasuke.

Sakura's Chakra Enhanced Strength: Cherry Blossom Clash

Sakura Haruno is a talented ninja who originally started as a ninja as a support fighter and expert in analyzing and observation. She always felt left behind by the advancement of Sasuke and Naruto. She eventually became fed up with feeling useless. After Naruto left to train under Jiraiya for two years, Sakura went to the Fifth Hokage, Tsuande, to ask for training in medical-jutsu. She was accepted as her new pupil and was even taught Tsunade's fighting techniques that gives the user monstrous strength in hand-to-hand combat. She studied hard in those two years and was able to reach the rank of a Chunin class ninja.

Sakura's Jutsu

• Transformation Jutsu: The Transformation Jutsu (変化の術, henge no jutsu) is a basic ninjutsu taught to in the Ninja Academy. It transforms the user into the appearance of another person and they can even speak as they do. This is a valuable skill for infiltration and deception. This is not a technique Sakura has frequently used.
• Substitution Jutsu: The Substitution Jutsu (変わり身の術, kawarimi no jutsu) is basic fighting technique taught to ninja of the Hidden Leaf after graduation from the Academy. It's designed to have the user replace their body in an instant with an object from the surroundings just before an attack can hit. Sakura is immense proficiency with this jutsu and used it to great effect during the Chunin Exams.
• Genjutsu release: The Genjutsu Release (幻術解, genjutsu kai) is a technique that allows the user to break basic Genjutsu. This technique was taught to Sakura by Kakashi Hatake. Though, this will not work on several more powerful Genjutsus.
• Sakura Blizzard Jutsu (サクラ吹雪の術): This is a technique that Sakura throws a storm of kunais, that have exploding bags on them.

• Chakra Enchanced Strength: This is just from precise Chakra control. She could cause the ground to split, or even cause the a small landside. She could also punch a hole into a cliff, or make a cave sink in.
• Cherry Blossom Clash: The Cherry Blossom Clash (桜花衝, ōkashō) is a technique Sakura uses with her Chakra Enhanced Strength skills she learned from Tsunade. By focusing a large amount of chakra to her hand, she punches into the ground causing a massive shock wave. The destruction is dependent on the amount of chakra focused.
• Healing Jutsu: The Healing Jutsu (掌仙術, shōsen jutsu) is a medical-ninjustu technique where the user forces chakra to their hand to speed the natural healing to the target and it can use used on one's self. Sakura was taught this technique for Tsunade.
• Chakra Scalpel: The Chakra Scalpel (チャクラのメス, chakura no mesu) is a technique for a medical-ninja to focus chakra at their hands to create an extremely fine and long blade that can cut into the body of another person. It can be used for surgery or to cut muscle and nerves of an opponent.
  Another Medical Technique that she could use from direct training from Lady Tsunade a.k.a The Fifth Hokage. She can severe internal organs, if used in actual combat, or use this to heal injuries.
• Poison Extraction Jutsu: The Poison Extraction Jutsu (細患抽出の術, saikan chūshutsu no jutsu) allows the user to actually isolate and remove poisons from the blood. Using the Chakra Scalpel, an incision is made into the victim then chakra is used to force a large amount of medicinal fluid into the incision. This fluid serves to isolate poisons to then be drawn out of the body. In the process, the poison is removed and the damaged areas of the body are repaired. The extracted poison can now be isolated and analyzed to create an antidote. This is a highly advanced technique that was taught to Sakura by Tsunade. She has used it to save the Kankuro of the Sand Village after he was poisoned by Sasori.

Anime Only:

• Four-Corner Seal Barrier: The Four Corner Seal Barrier (結界四方封陣, kekkai shihō fūjin) is a jutsu created by Tsunade that is designed to seal the Bijuu spirits. It was preformed with Shizune, Sakura haruno, Ino Yamanaka, and Hinata Hyuga. The jutsu requires special scrolls and blood, similar to a summoning jutsu. Together they used this technique to seal the Three-Tailed Turtle.
