Origin

Naruto Uzumaki was born in the Hidden Leaf Village to the Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage; and Kushina Uzumaki. The dreaded Nine-Tailed Demon Fox was on its path to wiping out the entire village and its inhabitants. In order to save the villagers, Minato sacrificed his own life to seal the fox demon into Naruto's infant body. As a result, Naruto grew up alone and orphaned, in a village that ostracized him. For all who were old enough, knew that Naruto contained the spirit of the Nine-tailed Fox. However, Naruto was not privy to that information. Naruto dreamed of growing up and becoming a ninja. He even dreamed as big as becoming the Hokage, who is the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village and the best ninja in the land. He reasoned, that once he becomes the Hokage, then the villagers would have to recognize his existence and respect him. However, while studying at the Ninja Academy, he had the poorest of grades in nearly all of his classes.
One night, Naruto was tricked into stealing a sacred scroll, in order to pass the graduation exams from the Ninja Academy, or so that he thought. His instructor, Iruka Umino, who lost his parents to the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox currently inside of Naruto, came to his rescue. Naruto learned that night, for the first time, about what is sealed inside of him. However, despite this "handicap," Naruto managed to turn obstacles into challenges, to one day, realize his dream of being the Hokage,

Creation

Original Naruto One-Shot

Naruto Uzumaki is the lead character of the Naruto series that was created by Masashi Kishimoto, but his original design was quite different than the version that was finally used. For the first one-shot of Naruto that was published in the Japanese Shounen Jump Magazine. Naruto was a fox demon who took human form and was sent into the world to make friends. This idea was put aside for another form that we know today--the young outcast with a violent demon fox sealed within him. This version of the series first began serialization Weekly Shonen Jump in November 1999.
Kishimoto specifically added in personality aspects and other traits that he felt were needed in any protagonist. He wanted him to be energetic and outgoing, but with a mischievous side, while he also wanted to keep Naruto simple-minded and stupid. The classic underdog archetype. He is similar in appearance to his father. He has blond-spiky hair and blue eyes. The clothing design of Naruto was based upon outfits that Kishimoto used to wear in his youth. He wanted the design to be unique, but also not standing out too much. The original color scheme of Naruto's jump suit was orange and blue. His face is three lines on each side that mimics whiskers. Though Naruto begins the official manga series with the same goggles as the one-shot story, it is replaced with a standard forehead protector. Kishimoto stated that he created the forehead protectors because the goggles were just too time-consuming to draw.
The finalized version of Naruto first appeared in Naruto Volume 1, CH. 1 of the manga. His first anime appearance was in Naruto - Episode 1 He Appears! Naruto Uzumaki. His character in the Japanese series is voiced by Junko Takeuchi, and the U.S. dub produced by VIZ Media is done by Maile Flanagan. When Naruto uses his Sexy Jutsu technique, his Japanese voice actress is Ema Kogure and his English voice actress is Stephanie Sheh. Naruto starts off as a character who has an abundance of power within him, thanks to the fox demon sealed inside him. However, he lacks the focus and the training necessary to tap into the Demon Fox's energy source. His signature technique would become the Shadow Clone Jutsu.

Narutomaki, 鳴戸巻き

Naruto's favorite food is ramen at the Ichiraku stand. In the Japanese version, Naurto ends all his statements with the phrase "-ttebayo". This is a verbal tick Kishimoto gave Naruto, as a trait he got from his mother. In the VIZ production for the U.S. market, this tick was replaced with the catchphrase "Believe it!". This phrase was panned by fans and eventually fazed out completely after the first few seasons of the English dubbed anime. Naruto is named after a type of processed fish paste, known as the kamaboko (蒲鉾). The narutomaki (鳴戸巻き) is a kamaboko with swirls.

Naruto in Episode 1

While the character design for Naruto has not change too dramatically from the original design, it has in the official manga. Naruto has undergone much character evolution in appearance, personality, and abilities, in the official manga. Naruto starts out as a scrawny trouble-maker of the village who is also the most hated. He has been alone, until becoming a part of the Team 7 squad under the tutelage of Kakashi Hatake. Naruto later trains under the legendary Jiraiya, who has also taught his father. Through difficult and gruesome training, Naruto goes on to learn new techniques at every step of the way and becomes more powerful. His signature technique is the Shadow Clone Jutsu. Naruto also completes the Rasengan attack. In times of great stress, Naruto has been able to tap into the chakra of the demon sealed within.

Naruto after time skip

A two-and-a-half year time gap lies in the series where Naruto leaves the village, in order to train for two years, Naruto, and his return to the village, Naruto Shippuden. In the duration, Naruto hopes to become stronger so he can face Orochimaru, who has seduced his friend, Sasuke Uchiha with power, and save Sasuke. In so doing, Naruto would fulfill his the promise to Sakura Haruno, to bring Sasuke back to Konoha. In his training, Naruto learns a great deal and masters many new skills and techniques. However, in his eagerness to train, Naruto has tapped into the powers of the Kyuubi. As a result, the Demon Fox has taken control over Naruto's body on several occasions and caused injuries and damages to the people and places around him.
To prepare for another great battle with the killer of his sensei, Jiraiya, Naruto travels to the realm of the frogs. There in the frogs' world, Naruto trains and masters Sage Mode by drawing his power from the elements that exist in nature. Naruto uses this skill in the battle with Pain. After defeating Pain, the entire village sees Naruto as their hero and comes to recognize as a great ninja. The villagers have also began love and admire Naruto. However, his old friend Sasuke aims to destroy it. A great ninja war is on the brink of eruption, due to the actions of a secret faction known as the Akatsuki and Sasuke, who has joined the group.

Recently

In the current story, Naruto has completed his training with Killer Bee to merge his own chakra with that of the Nine-tailed Fox. In doing so learned the truth of the night his parents were murdered and was sealed with the fox demon.

Major Story Arcs

Introduction Arc

Naruto, born as an orphan, was always shunned and looked down upon by the villagers of the Hidden Leaf. As a boy who has been largely ignored and resented, Naruto always tried to get other peoples attention by acting out through shenanigans and committing foolish and delinquent activities. For example, he spray-painted the Stone Head Statues of Konoha's Hokages at the front and foremost area of the village, as is shown in the opening scene in the Naruto series. Although Naruto successfully misleads two ninjas who chase him down for his disrespectful and offensive acts, his sensei, Iruka, manages to catch him. After he gets lambasted for what he has done, Iruka decides to take Naruto out for their favorite meal-- ramen at the Ichiraku (一楽ラーメン) stand. It should be noted that the word "Naruto" signifies the small swirling spirals of fish cakes usually found in ramen from Japan.

Graduation

The next day, Naruto is getting ready to pass his graduation exam from the Ninja Academy. He also believes that he would finally get a start on missions to "prove" himself to the villagers. He is certain that one day, he would become Hokage-- the most powerful ninja in the village, as well as its leader. Interestingly, Naruto wants to lead and help Ko-no-Ha's villagers despite the hated and resentment he has experienced throughout his life for reasons unbeknownst to him. In addition, his determination to become the greatest ninja and Hokage is unwavering, no matter the strife and obstacles he has to endure.

The "Sexy Jutsu"

When the time came for his exam, Naruto makes a sorry attempt at cloning himself, thus failing the transformation test and the graduation exam. As the only examinee to fail the transformation test, Naruto decides to redeem himself by being a class clown. This time, he transforms successfully into an "adorable" naked girl, accompanied with strategically placed smoke. All the while, "she" blows kisses at everyone, resulting in Iruka getting the traditional anime "nose bleed." After clogging his nose up, Iruka told Naruto that the latter has failed the test and is not going to receive the coveted ninja head band, which signifies a true shinobi. Soon thereafter, Naruto is seen seated on the swing set outside of the Ninja Academy. Naruto is further saddened when he looks at the parents who showed affection and approval to their children for passing the graduation test. Such as offering to take the graduates out to wherever the they wanted, etc. To add insult to injury, Naruto can also make out the slurs the parents say about him. He ignores what he hears as Naruto stares at the ground in front of him. Naruto is feeling hopeless and lost, until Mizuki, a Ninja Academy instructor (who has been kind to Naruto in the past), offered to help Naruto pass the graduation exam with the teaching of one trick.
Naruto listens intently, as what is perceived as a kind older boy, tells him has to be done. Naruto is told to sneak into the Hokage's mansion and steal a certain secret scroll. According to Mizuki, by merely reading the scroll, Naruto will be able to learn a jutsu that guarantees the passing of the graduation exam. Naruto is fully prepared to steal the scroll and successfully infiltrates the Hokage's mansion. When seen by the Third Hokage, Naruto uses his Sexy Jutsu and escapes with the scroll in hand and heads back to Mizuki.
While hiding in the forest, Naruto reads and a learns a jutsu from the scroll. The first happens to be the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique (Taiju Kagebunshin no Jutsu). Later, the Hokage notifies several other shinobi to find Naruto and bring him back with the scroll. Although the sent shinobi are all outrun by the Kyuubi boy, Iruka, who knew Naruto the best, is able to catch him with Mizuki. Mizuki tells Naruto to hand him the scroll, but Iruka warns him not to do so. An argument ensues, resulting in Mizuki telling Naruto that the latter has the Nine-Tailed Fox contained in him, which is the why he is hated and resented in great depths by the village. Shocked by the unexpected revelation, Naruto runs off, leaving Iruka to face off against Mizuki. Meanwhile, Naruto, who initially watches from afar, interferes in the battle just in the nick of time, as Mizuki is about to kill Iruka. After warning Mizuki to keep his hands off his sensei, Naruto uses his newly learned Multiple Shadow Clone technique and defeats Mizuki to a bloody pulp. Being Impressed that Naruto is able to master a difficult jutsu, such as the Multiple Shadow Clone technique, Iruka takes Naruto out to ramen for lunch. Iruka then proceeds to give Naruto his own Konoha Headband, signifying that the latter has indeed become a true ninja he has strove hard to become.

Formation of Team 7

Team 7's Genin Formation

Later that month, Naruto learns that he is to be part of a three-man team, consisting of Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura, Kakashi Hatake. Naruto is not thrilled at the thought of being in the same team as Sasuke, who he deems nothing more than a pretty boy and an arrogant jerk. He is excited, however, at the opportunity of spending more time with Sakura, his crush. Unbeknownst to him, Sasuke is the object of Sakura's affection, and she can careless about Naruto.
The teammates first met Kakashi as he enters a classroom and walks into Naruto's blackboard eraser booby trap. Although neither Sasuke nor Sakura condones Naruto's mischievous behavior, they are amused by the outcome. The two wonder if their new instructor is capable at all. Though such assumptions are later proven to be mistaken.

Naruto's sensei, Kakashi Hatake

Kakashi takes the team into the Leaf Village. As an ice breaker before setting out for any mission assignments, he asks them to tell the rest of the group a little bit about themselves. Naruto states that he aspires to be a Hokage--the greatest ninja and leader of Konoha--one day, which has piqued Kakashi's interest. Kakashi listens on to Sakura's introduction, followed by Sasuke's. Sasuke declares that there is a specific person in mind that he is determined to kill. Naruto, who has all the while been goofing around, is shuddered into seriousness, hoping that Sasuke's target is not him.
Kakashi tells the team members to return home, with the additional instruction that they are not to eat any breakfast the next morning, when they return for their training. He explains that the physical exertion might cause stomach discomfort, ending in the regurgitation of any contents in it. As the teammates head home, they ponder at what awaits them the next day, while following Kakashi's directions.
The next morning, upon reaching the training ground, Kakashi explains that the team will train on teamwork. The objective is to work together and obtain the bells tied to Kakashi's waist, in anyway possible. Kakashi adds that the team is bound for failure, unless they attack him with the intent to kill. In addition, the team members that successfully capture the bells are to have lunch boxes. Given that the three members have arrived empty-stomached, it is a huge incentive. However, there is an additional caveat--although there are three team members, there are only two lunch boxes.

Konoha's most sacred technique, the 1,000 Years of Death.

Naruto, being headstrong, as always, attacks Kakashi before the teacher can officially commence the training session. Although Naruto's attempts are quickly foiled by the White Fox of the North. However, Kakashi compliments on Naruto's spirit and his attack with intent to kill. Kakashi then announces the commencement of the training session successfully. Naruto proceeds to attack his teacher with shadow clones. Kakashi foils Naruto's attempt easily. He did so, this time, by turning into Naruto and mingle with the student's many shadow clones. This induced the kage bunshins to attack one another while yelling that they should be attacking Kakashi's imitation in aggravation, Naruto realizes too late that he could have isolated Kakashi's bunshin by simply ending his kage bunshin jutsu. Kakashi interrupts the youth's revelation by appearing from behind and attacking Naruto's rear with a kunai. Kakashi calls this Konoha's most "Sacred" Technique--The "One Thousand Years of Death" jutsu. Sakura comments that while she has previously taken Kakashi seriously, this assault on Naruto is ridiculous and over the top.
Sasuke attempts to face Kakashi with Taijutsu, and forces the latter to stop toying around with the genins, i.e., not reading his novel, Ichaicha Paradise (Flirt Paradise), while fighting them. On the other hand, Naruto thinks he has a better idea as he sees one of the bells lying on the ground. He figures that Kakashi must have dropped it during the fighting, as an incompetent fool would. As Naruto walks over what he perceives to be a fallen bell and proceeds to pick it up, he is caught in a trap and hangs upside down by the ankle from a tree on a rope. Naruto considers giving up at this point. However, as he wonders what the Fourth Hokage would have done, he is determined to fight his way out. He escapes from the trap, briefly. Unfortunately for Naruto, he is soon caught by another rope by the ankle, and is back to hanging upside down from the same tree.
After declaring the three ninja are hopeless, Kakashi reveals the meaning of the exercise--teamwork--and tells Sasuke and Sakura to eat the lunch in front of Naruto, as punishment for trying to eat without permission. Kakashi then leaves so that the three team members are alone. Feeling sorry for Naruto, Sasuke offers some of his food to Naruto. Seeing that his crush has done so, Sakura follows suit. Kakashi, who has been hiding behind the tree while observing his team, reappears to charge at them. He stops at the last second, in front of his team members and announces that they have passes. The lunch was actually a test to see if they would share the food with their teammates. He explains that “those who violate the rules and fail to follow orders are lower than garbage; however, those who neither care for nor support their fellows are even lower than that.” Naruto is touched by his words. Kakashi also declares that Team 7’s first mission shall begin the next day. Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura begin to leave. However, Naruto is left behind while still tied to a tree stump.

Land of the Waves Arc

Team 7 is next seen following an unidentified figure. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are then told to capture it. Naruto, of course, pounces on the figure. It is revealed that their target is a cat, Tora, belonging to the Fire Daimyo’s wife. After Team 7 returns for their pay, Naruto complains about the lack of excitement in their missions. After a bit of wearing down, the Hokage gives Naruto a C-rank mission. The mission is to guard a bridge builder named Tazuna. Soon after leaving the village, they are attacked by two ninjas. During the battle Sasuke holds off the ninjas but Naruto freezes and is cut by one of their claws.

Sasuke, Naruto, & the Demon Brothers

After Kakashi subdues them, he looks at Naruto’s wound and says that the claw was poisoned. Naruto panics and Kakashi tells him that the wound needs to be bled to release the poison. Naruto then stabs very deeply into his wound, vowing never to freeze up again and that he will protect the old man. Kakashi tells him that, though he has extracted the poison, he has overdid it and Naruto is very likely to bleed to death. Naruto panics again. However, as Kakashi observes the wound, he discovers that it has already started to heal. Kakashi then reassures Naruto the he will be fine.
Tazuna reveals that he has misled Team 7 with the mission parameters. Instead, He is actually being hunted by a billionaire named Gato, who makes his money by Marine transportation. The ninja's they just fought are sent by Gato to assassinate him to prevent the bridge from being completed. Tazuna has, in fact, been on Gato's bad side. The bridge in construction connects to the mainland, which would decrease the need for Gato's transportation operation. This in fact has upgraded the mission from a C-rank to an A-rank. Tazuna has to trick them because he could not afford an A-rank Mission. Team 7 reluctantly agrees to continue.

Zabuza's approach

Team 7 then takes a rowboat to the land of the waves. As they begin walking, Naruto attempts to outdo Sasuke, eventually stunning a rabbit with a projectile. Suddenly, Kakashi alarms his team to duck. Sakura does so by pushing Naruto down as a rapidly spinning sword flies overhead and into a tree with Zabuza standing on it's hilt.
Naruto sees Zabuza as a chance to prove himself and attempts to attack Zabuza. Kakashi holds him back in time. He tells Naruto that Zabuza is way out of his league, and proceeds to reveal his Sharingan eye. As the fight between Zabuza and Kakashi rages on, Team 7 realizes that they may be in a more dangerous predicament than they had realized. With the three of them in formation, they attempted to protect Tazuna.
During the bout, Zabuza sent out a water clone Jutsu to kill Tazuna. Naruto and Sasuke's quick thinking has barely saved them. Naruto barrages the psychotic killer with all his might and shadow clones, while Sasuke devises a deadly plan. With Kakashi being captured, all that the three could do was hope that they could save him with this plan or else, they were dead meat. No one has any clue of how dangerous Zabuza really is, though. He has captured Kakashi with his water prison Jutsu and proceeds to make the latter sedentary during the fight. With Sasuke's plan, however, they managed to get Kakashi out of the prison, thus turning the tides of the battle. Sasuke launched two demon wind shurikens, one being a Naruto clone. Zabuza dodges them both while Naruto freed Kakashi. Team 7 managed to win but Zabuza got away with Haku's help. Later they confront Zabuza again on a bridge. Kakashi fights Zabuza while Naruto and Sasuke barely manage to fend off Zabuza as he killed himself and Gato all at once.

The Chuunin Exam Arc

The first test of the Chunin Exam is a paper and pencil test. The objective is to cheat on every question without getting caught. Naruto has a hard time deciding whether or not to stay for the test. If he gets the last question wrong, his entire team will fail as a result. Subsequently, the Team 7 members is never be permitted to take the Chuunin Exams again. Naruto decides to stay. It is shown later that he has gotten every question wrong on the test. However, everyone who stays for the test passes and moves on to the next test. As a result, Team 7 continues to the next stage.
The second part of the test takes place in the Forest of Death. Every team starts with one of two scrolls--the Earth scroll or the Heaven scroll. The teams to complete the set by stealing the missing scroll from other teams pass the test. However, there is one little caveat, i.e., the teams have to do so without reading the contents of either scroll. The teams that cannot contain their curiosity fails the test. During the test, Team 7 encounters Orochimaru in the Forest of Death. Although everyone manages to survive the encounter, Sasuke pays a heavy price with a curse seal placed on his shoulder by Orochimaru.
Towards the end of the second test, Naruto and Sakura decide to fake one of the scrolls. The plan is to figure out the contents of the other scroll by reading the scroll they have started out with. Fortunately, Kabuto stops them from reading the contents just in time. Sasuke returns to his teammates dissapointed. Kabuto decides to help Naruto and his team. He tells them of ways to get the missing scroll. After a fight with some Rain Nin, they make it to the designated tower, where the next section of the test is to commence.

Naruto vs. Kiba, Chuunin Exam

The third test, the tournaments, starts. Naruto's is to fight Kida, in order to advance. Although Kiba has thought it it would be a piece of cake to pass the test, he soon realizes that he is mistaken. Stunny Kiba with a fart, Naruto and his shadow clones use a new technique, the "Naruto Uzumaki Barrage"--a blatant rip off of Sasuke's "Lion's Barrage"--to impress Sakura and successfully defeat Kiba. When Hanata is faced off with Neji, a cousin from a branch of the Hyuuga family who has defeated her continuously in the past, Naruto cheers her on. Naruto encouraged Hinata by letting her know that Neji does not think that she is weak, useless, or undeserving to be in the main branch of the Hyuuga family at all. However, despite Naruto's best efforts, Hinata is defeated.
Before Part II of the Chuunin Exam
Before the final Chuunin Exam, every ninja has one month to train for their respective matches. Naruto is assigned to Ebisu as his trainer. Naruto tries his best to get out of training under Ebisu. However, Kakashi is too busy teaching Sasuke. In addition, as the only instructor who is willing to train Naruto in Konoha, Naruto is stuck with Ebisu.
As the teacher and student pair's first training exercise, Ebisu and Naruto head off to a spa. There, Naruto is to learn chakra control to the point where he can easily walk on water. To focus Naruto's attention and concentration, Ebisu has chosen the training location above a body of boiling water at the spa. Ebisu hopes that as Naruto's survival instinct kicks in, he would master the jutsu speedily. Needless to say, Ebisu has to catch Naruto many times to prevent certain death.
As Naruto is just grasping the concept of chakra moulding and walking on water, he spots a big man peeping though a hole on a wall on the other side of the room into the women's section of the spa. Ebisu is enraged by the behavior of the peeping Tom. He continues to admonish the peeper, stating the obvious unacceptability of such lewd behavior, especially during a training session. Ebisu then asks the large man to leave. Not getting any response, Ebisu charges at the man with a kunai and is easily defeated, even thought the man has barely paid any attention to him. Interestingly, the giant toad that the man has been standing on has done all the work.
Noticing that the stranger is infinitely stronger than his currently assigned instructor, Naruto asks the man, who he has dubbed the Pervy Sage (Ero Sennin), to be his teacher. At Naruto's persistent begging, the Pervy Sage brushes him off, saying that he is busy with his "research" and does not have any time to deal with brats like Naruto.

However, upon seeing Naruto's Sexy Jutsu, the Pervy Sage quickly changes his mind. He agrees to train Naruto as long as he stays in the female form throughout the training sessions. At Naruto's refusal, the Pervy Sage introduced himself as the great "Toad Sage Jiraiya." He further explains that he is no run of the mill pervert, but a "Mega-Perv." He requests that Naruto should leave him alone.
Naruto, nevertheless, continues to pester Jiraiya. Finally, after Naruto's incessant begging, Jiraiya decides to train the Hokage-aspiring youth. Jiraiya instructs Naruto on chakra that Ebisu has barely touched upon. As Naruto almost completes the water-walking jutsu, Jiraiya asks the student to use up every bit of chakra in him. Naruto does so for several day by beating himself up with his shadow clones. As Naruto ponders the purpose of chakra draining, Jiraiya responds that Naruto needs to expand his chakra everyday, in order for the teacher to observe something.

Shiki Fuujin & Five-Element Seal

One day, Naruto's shirt is ripped and Jiraiiya notices the seals on the youth's stomach. In addition to the original Shiki Fuujin which seals the Kyuubi within Naruto, there is an additional Five-Element Seal (Gogyou Fuuin) around the first seal. Jiraiya realizes that the mismatch of even (Shiki Fuujin, 8) and odd (Gogyou Fuuin, 5) numbers is disrupting Naruto's ability to manipulate his chakra. Jiraiya is pleasantly surprised that Naruto has managed to manipulate his chakra thus far, even with the disturbances from the seals. Jiraiya discreetly removes Orochimaru's seal with Five-Element Unseal (Gogyou Kaiin).

Naruto's abilities to mold chakra dramatically increases after the removal of Orochimaru's seal. As Naruto masters walking on water, Jiraiya decides to teach the eager student a very special art--the art of summoning creatures with ninja abilities. Although Naruto is initially disappointed at only being able to summon toads and frogs, he trains with zeal to become a better ninja.
Chuunin Exam Continued

Naruto vs. Neji

In the finals, Naruto's opponent is Neji--the perfect opponent. Naruto is enraged at what Neji has done to Hinata during an earlier part of the Chuunin Exam. Despite what Neji has said about how everyone's destiny is sealed and predetermined, Naruto defeats Neji, thus proving to Neji that destinies can change.
When Sasuke's match commences, before it is finished, almost everyone in the audience is asleep, due to a genjutsu performed by Kabuto Yakushi. Kakashi, Guy, and Sakura release their chakra to create a barrier to protect themselves from the genjitsu. Sakura and Naruto wake up Shikamaru, according to Kakashi's instructions. The three of them are to find Sasuke with the help of Kakashi's ninja dog, Pakkun. Shikamaru voluntarily stays behind to fed off a group of sound ninjas so the rest of the group can move ahead.

Gamabunta, the Chief Toad

When they find Sasuke, Gaara sticks Sakura to a tree after fighting with Sasuke. Naruto then fights Gaara. After a few minutes, Gaara transforms into his true form, the One Tailed Shukaku. Naruto tries to summon the Chief Toad, Gamabunta. However, to Naruto's disappointment, Gamakichi appreas, instead. On the second attempt, he summons Gamabunta successfully. The Chief Toad fights Shukaku with a short sword, tantou, with difficulty. Naruto and Gamabunta use a Combination Transformation into the form of a giant fox--the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox (Kyubi). This transformation allows Naruto to approach Gaara while Gamabunta limits the mobility of Shukaku. The combination allows Naruto to wake up Gaara, thus ending the rampage of Shukaku.

Search for Tsunade Arc

Naruto practicing Rasengan

Naruto travels with Jiraiya to find Tsunade to offer her the position as the Fifth Hokage. During the interval, Jiraiya teaches Naruto the Rasengan, a justu that the fouth Hokage created. Later Jiraiya and Naruto find Tsunade, who is with her former apprentice and current assistant Shizune.
Tsunade disparages the position of the Hokage, insisting that only a fool would want to be one. Naruto is infuriated at Tsunade's comment, as he aspires to be one one day. Naruto challenges Tsunade to a duel, which she easily wins with using only one finger. Being Intrigued by Naruto, Tsunade wagers that if the boy can master the Rasengan withing the week, she will award him with the treasured necklace from the First Hokage. However, Shizune shudders at the suggestion, for the only two people who Tsunade has given the same necklace to in the past have died the very next day after receiving it. Naruto having found out the interesting, albeit tragic, history of the necklace, is even more determined to obtain it. He trains, without rest or returning to the inn until exhaustion, to master the technique. As the winner of the wager, Tsunade rewards Naruto with the necklace.

First Hokage's Necklace

Naruto also finds out that Tsunade is meeting Orochimaru and tries to stop the meeting with the help of Shizune and Jiraiya. Orochimaru, with Kabuto as his intermediary, has taunted Tsunade with the offer of reviving her loved ones for the price of fixing his arms. Tsunade has been on the fence. However, in the end, she has decided to not help Orochimaru and become the Fifth Hokage to protect Konoha.

Sasuke Retrieval Arc

The Sasuke Retrieval Team

When Shikamaru is assigned to retrieve Sasuke from the Sound Four, Tsunade says that he must bring Naruto with him. Shikamaru is also assembles with Kiba & Akamaru, Choji, and Neji. The team tracks down the Sound Four and Sasuke. With Neji's help using Byakugan, the team discovers that Sasuke is currently inside a coffin that the Sound Four is carrying. In an unsuccessful attempt to ambush the Sound Four, the team from Konoha is trapped inside a rock prison, set forth by Jiroubou. Shikamaru, using his clever strategies, with Choji's help, escapes from the rock prison and saves the entire team from chakra exhaustion. Choji decides to leave behind to fight and defeat Jiroubou, while the rest of the team pushes ahead to catch up with the rest of the Sound Four and rescue Sasuke.
Shikamaru uses this opportunity to disguise as the defeated Jiroubou in hopes to retrieve Sasuke. The rest of the Sound Four immediately picks up the changes in demeanor and moves on, leaving Kidoumaru to deal with the Konoha group. Neji decides that his abilities of the Byakugan and Gentle Fist is better suited to dealing with Kidoumaru's persistent webs. The rest of the group moves ahead in pursuit of the Sound Four.
With Naruto's shadow clones and clever planning on Shikamaru's part, the team is able to secure the coffin with Sasuke inside, and be on their way back to Konoha. However, the appearance of Sakon & Ukon and Tayuya catches up quickly to the group. Being irritated at Akamaru's barking and setting off bomb tags, Sakon & Ukon tied Akamaru to a tree trunk right next to a bomb tag. In saving Akamaru from the imminent explosion, Kiba, while holding on to Akamaru, falls off a cliff with Sakon & Ukon. All the while, Tayuya approaches closer. Just before Shikamaru can have his plan take action, Kimimaro appears and gets possession of the coffin with Sasuke in it right away. Kimimaro takes the coffin towards Orochimaru, while Tayuya is left to do as she pleases with Shikamaru and Naruto.
Shikamaru tricks Tayuya to let Naruto catch up with Kimimaro. Naruto confronts Kimimaro, still holding the coffin, in an open field just out of the woods. Unbeknownst to Shikamaru, Kiba is fighting Sakon & Ukon at the bottom of the cliff. At the same time, Shikamaru faces new tough opponents summoned by Tayuya.

Kimimaro vs. Naruto

Naruto fights Kimimaro with all his might, pulling out his trump card, the Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu (太重陰分身の術 Tajuu Kage Bunshin no Jutsu) in Kyuubi form. However, Kimimaro, who can manipulate his bones into weapons and moves with agility, eliminates Naruto's clones without breaking any sweat. Kimimaro handles Naruto with ease with a combination of his bone manipulation and dance repertoire. When Kimimaro has eliminated everyone of Naruto's shadow clones, Sasuke appears from the coffin. When he is asked by Naruto what he is up to, Sasuke replies with maniacal cackle. Sasuke leaves Naruto and heads towards Orochimaru's hideout. Naruto's persuit after Sasuke is stopped short by Kimimaro, who is about to deliver the final blow that would end Naruto's life. Rock Lee appears in the nick of time and saves Naruto from the brink of death. Rock Lee keeps Kimimaro occupied, so that Naruto can continue on his persuit of Sasuke.
Naruto finds Sasuke and fights him with all his might in hopes of bringing Sasuke back to Konoha. Naruto draws power from the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, while Sasuke from Orochimaru's curse seal. Despite Naruto's best efforts, Sasuke defeats him and continues his path to Orochimaru's hideout.

Sasuke vs. Naruto

Kakashi finds the seriously injured Naruto and brings him back to Konoha, where the lad is to convalesce at the hospital. Jiraiya visits Naruto at the hospital, informing the injured that he has three years to save Saasuke, before Orochimaru needs to take a new body. In addition, the Pervy Sage adds that Naruto is not safe staying at one place for too long, since the Akatsuki is after the Kyuubi inside him. Jiraiya offers Naruto the opportunity to train and travel with him for the time being, aiming to strengthening the lad and increase his chances of rescuing Sasuke and surviving encounters with the Akatsuki. Naruto takes up on the offer. Naruto is seen leaving Konoha with the Pervy Sage and starting their journey, thus ending the first part of the series. Naruto is not to be seen again, until two-and-a-half years later--the Naruto Shippuden Era.

NARUTO SHIPPUUDEN ERA

Sai and Sasuke Arc

Kakashi has previously exhausted too much of his chakra, due to his encounter with Itachi Uchiha. Due to the severity of the encounter, he is in a coma and hospitalized indefinitely. The previous Team 7, with Sasuke missing and Kakashi out of commission, the remaining members are assigned to a new team, albeit temporary.
Naruto and Sakura are introduced to their new team leader and teammate, Yamato and Sai, respectively. Yamato happens to be a junior to Kakashi during his ANBU career. Naruto announces that Sai has just attacked him moments earlier and protests his joining into the team. Sai states, matter-of-factly, that he simply wants to test how skillful Naruto is as a ninja. The apathetic Sai infuriates both Naruto and Sakura. Captain Yamato, therefore, starts his second job as the peace-keeper in the team, due to Sai's lack of knowledge in human interactions, etiquette, and emotions.

Tenchi Bridge, 天地橋

The team is scheduled to set out on an important "Heaven and Earth Reconnaissance Mission" (天地偵察任務, Tenchi Teisatsu Ninmu), to meet with a spy working for Sasori, who has infiltrated Orochimaru's hideout. Before the team departs, Yamato goes over the details of the mission and asks the team to capture him, if they can, as a way to get to know the members and a teamwork building exercise. The plan backfires, however, for Sai ignors the leaves the bound Naruto and captures Yamato alone. However, Naruto resolves that if Sai is needed in order to bring Sasuke back, he would swallow his pride and put up with working with Sai.
Yamato, disguised as Sasori, rendezvous with the spy while the rest of the team hide out of sight at a distance. It turns out that the spy is no other than Kabuto. In addition, the meeting has been plotted by him to do away with Sasori. Yamato and his team is confronted with Orochimaru and Kabuto. Kabuto tries to attack Naruto from behind unsuccessfully, and is sent flying backwards by the Kyuubi's chakra, knockng Sakura unconscious in the process. As a result of the chakra release, the bridge is destroyed, having Naruto and Orochimaru on one side, and Yamato, Sakura, Sai, and Kabuto on the other.
Yamato stays with Sakura, protecting the only medical ninja on his team, while Sai and Yamato's clone move into the other side to observe Naruto's fight with Orochimaru. At Orochimaru's goading and taunting, Naruto loses himself and sprouts as many as four tails of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox that resides inside him. Seemingly amused by toying Naruto around, Orochimaru skips around and evades Naruto's attacks with ease. At one moment, Orochimaru charges at Naruto head-on and is cut in two by the latter. To Naruto's dismay, Orochimaru reattaches himself and resumes fighting. Naruto attacks again with a giant chakra blast, which Orochimaru summons the Triple Rashamon as shields, which are destroyed completely. Orochimaru astonishes Naruto by reappearing from underneath Naruto and sends him flying back toward his comrades with the Sword of Kusanagi.

Naruto under Yamato's Wooden Binding Jutsu

Naruto is pinned down to a boulder by Kusanagi briefly. However, the sword has not pierced Naruto. Instead, Naruto swipes the sword off of his stomach. Kabuto, Yamato and Sakura leap to get out of the way of the fast-moving sword. Seeing that Kusanagi has no effect on damaging Naruto, Orochimaru withdraws the sword. Sakura, being saddened by Naruto's suffering, approaches and begs Naruto to stop, stating that she will be the one to bring Sasuke back. The cry falls onto deaf ears, since the Kyuubi is in control of Naruto's body at the moment. Yamato quickly signs a wooden binding jutsu to control the rampage. However, just before the jutsu is ready, Sakura is sent flying by a swipe of one of the four tails. Kabuto volunteers to heal Sakura's wound in exchange for eliminating as many members of the Akatsuki as Yamato's team and Konoha can. Kabuto leaves to attend to Orochimaru.
Meanwhile, Orochimaru, whose temporary body is showing signs of rejection, decides to retreat for the time being. He is approached by Sai before his departure. Sai, who claims that he is working for Danzo, has orders from his superior to align with Orochimaru. Orochimaru reads a letter from Danzo, is convinced that Sai is telling the truth, and takes leave with Kabuto and Sai.
While Sakura has lied to Naruto about the cause of her injury to spare his feelings. However, Yamato reveals to Naruto that the boy is the one responsible for Sakura's injury. Yamato adds that, by letting the Kyuubi taking control over his body, Naruto is jeopardizing the safety of the team and those close to him. The captain also encourages Naruto to believe in himself, for he doesn't need the Kyuubi's powers to be strong.
Yamato, Naruto, and Sakura give chase after Sai, Kabuto, and Orochimaru. Team Yamato, sans Sai, arrives at Orochimaru's hideout, thanks to the captain's clone and a seed tracking device. They locate Sai, who is held in a locked room, since Orochimaru is not completely convinced that Sai can be fully trusted. The team captures Sai, bound by a wooden jutsu and is set outside Orochimaru's hideout. Just before the team is ready to move back into the hideout, Kabuto assails on the team and recaptures Sai. Soon after Kabuto releases Sai from the wooden bind, Sai subdues Kabuto, to everyone's surprise. Sai relays Naruto his reason as wanting to observe this bond that Naruto has with Sasuke, in attempt to understand his own bond with his late "older brother."
Kabuto is left bound by a wooden jutsu and watched over by Yamato's clone. The team heads back and splits into two teams--Yamato with Sakura, and Naruto with Sai. Therefore, increasing their chances of locating Sasuke, in the maze that is Orochimaru's hideout. Naruto collapses from exhaustion and is carried off to rest at a corridor. Sai stays with him for the duration until Naruto wakes up. Naruto regains consciousness and Sai suddenly remembers what he wanted to draw to finish his picture book. Soon after Sai is finished with the book, Orochimaru discovers them as he approaches. Naruto decides to fight Orochimaru alone and asks Sai to continue searching for Sasuke. Sensing Naruto's chakra release, Yamato arrives to his aide with Sakura. Orochimaru taunts Naruto to get rid of at least one Akatsuki for him, then retreats, announcing that he has to deal with Sai. Yamato soon discovers that Sai's real mission is to assassinate Sasuke.
Sai finds Sasuke first. The commotion of Sasuke and Sai's confrontation soon notifies the rest of the team of their location. The rest of Team Yamato quickly arrives to the source of the commotion. To everyone's surprise, Sai decided to help Naruto to bring Sasuke back to Konoha. Sasuke lunges at and attacks Naruto. Sai jumps in just in time to save Naruto from Sasuke's sword. However, when Yamato tries to block Sasuke's sword, he was unsuccessful and is stabbed in the shoulder.
Naruto, being weakened further by Sasuke's attack, is taunted to the Kyuubi to use his power. Naruto refuses to break the seal that confines the Demon Fox. Sasuke easily enters Naruto's inner state and faces the Kyuubi. Sasuke suppresses the powers of the beast with ease. Seeing an opportunity, Yamato pushes Sasuke's sword out of his would with his wooden jutsu (木遁 mokuton). Yamato announces that though he has not wanted to hurt his friend, he is not going to hold back anymore.
Just as Sasuke is about to summon his fearsome new jutsu, Orochimaru grabs his arm to stop the initiation. Kabuto arrives, declaring that an enemy's enemy is a friend. Kabuto further adds that Sasuke has only advantages to gain by keeping Naruto and company alive, since their common enemy of Akatsuki, thus making them temporary allies. Sasuke leaves with Orochimaru and Kabuto.

Hidan and Kakuzu Arc

After returning to the Leaf village, Naruto begins learning about elemental recomposition with Kakashi and Yamato. Kakashi explains that everyone's chakra has a specific elemental affinity, his own being lightning and Yamato's being both water and earth, thanks to his unique bloodline limit. Naruto discovers that his chakra has an affinity towards wind, something's that's kind of rare. Kakashi advises Naruto to talk to Asuma for advices on controlling and manipulating the chakra, since the latter also has the same affinity.

Asuma & Wind Chakra

Asuma explains that wind has a special cutting properties and demonstrates by first charging his trench knife with wind chakra then throwing it straight through a tree. Naruto returns to Kakashi and Yamato to train. Kakashi instructs Naruto to use a few dozen Shadow Clones to help him learn the techniques more quickly, while Yamato stands ready to use his ability to suppress the Kyuubi's chakra, when it goes out of control, allowing Naruto to use excess amounts of chakra, without sprouting any of Kyuubi's tails.
Once Naruto learns how to use his wind chakra a few days later, Kakashi reveals that the Rasengan is actually an incomplete technique. For the Fourth Hokage has intended to combine the Rasengan with his own elemental affinity to form another jutsu. Kakashi also reveals that he also can use the Rasengan. He explains that the Chidori is created from his failed attempt of trying to combine his lightning chakra with the Rasengan. However, Kakashi believes that Naruto will be able to succeed where both him and Minato have failed. Naruto begins trying to combine the two. While Naruto trains, Asuma, Shikamaru, and three other Leaf ninjas set out to capture Akatsuki members. They encounter Hidan and Kakuzu and confrontations ensue. Unfortunately, Asuma is killed in the conflict.

Naruto's Shadow Clones & Rasenshuriken

Some time later, after some preparation, Shikamaru, Chouji, Ino, and Kakashi set out to avenge Asuma. Naruto and Yamato show up to save Kakashi, Ino, and Chouji in their losing battle against Kakuzu, while Sakura and Sai go to aid Shikamaru against Hidan. Naruto insists on fighting Kakuzu by himself. He uses his Shadow Clones to surround Kakuzu and attempts to hit Kakuzu with his new Rasenshuriken while the Akatsuki is distracted. However, Naruto's plan is not successful; he is saved from certain death by Yamato and Kakashi. Naruto tries again with the same attack. Kakuzu believes the Shadow Clones do not have enough chakra to use such a high-level technique and be effective. As a result, he ignores all but the original Naruto. Kakuzu succeeds in killing who he believed to be the Naruto original, wielding the Rasenshuriken. However, it appears to be a shadow clone. Naruto appears from behine Kakuzu and attacks him with the Rasenshuriken and succeeds in destroying two of Kakuzu's hearts, in addition to injuring him internally. Nevertheless, the technique is a double-edged sword, as it also injures Naruto. Therefore, Tsunade deems it a forbidden jutsu.

Itachi Pursuit Arc

After Kakashi and Naruto recover from their injuries, they resume their search for Sasuke, who has managed to defeat Orochimaru and is seeking Itachi. Kakashi and Naruto set out with Yamato, Sakura, Sai, Kiba, Shino, and Hinata. Naruto and company first encounter Kabuto, who has grafted some of Orochimaru’s remains onto himself. Kabuto reveals that while suppressing Orochimaru’s will from taking over his entire body, he wishes to tap into his former master’s powers and surpass him. Kabuto thanks Naruto for inspiring him to do so. Kabuto presents them with a book containing all of the information he has collected on the Akatsuki and takes his leave.

Naruto uses his Shadow Clones to be more efficient in searching for Sasuke. One shadow clone is to find Itachi, two to speak with Itachi, while another one to find Sasuke. Sasuke destroys Naruto’s clone while the team gets closer to finding Sasuke. However, Naruto and company are stopped by Tobi on their persuit. Against Kakashi’s advice, Naruto rushes in to attack Tobi, a mysterious Akatsuki who does not appear in Kabuto’s notes. Tobi easily evades Naruto’s attacks while knocking him around, despite the latter’s best efforts. Seeing Naruto’s struggle, the rest of the team joins in. Tobi continues to toy with and stall them, until Zetsu, another Akatsuki shows up. Zetsu relays to Tobi that Itachi has died against his fight with Sasuke. Tobi and Zetsu take their leave. Naruto and company, no longer deterred, head to Sasuke and Itachi’s location. However, by the time they arrive at the scene, neither Itachi nor Sasuke is there to be found.

Invasion of Pain Arc

Naruto mourns the death of Jiraiya

The team returns to Konoha after an unsuccessful mission. Naruto revisits the conversation he and Itachi have had while under his genjitsu. Naruto claims that he is more of a brother to Sasuke than Itachi has ever been. Itachi inquires what Naruto would do if Sasuke is to attack Konoha. Itachi pushes further by asking if Naruto has what it takes to kill Sasuke or let Konoha be destroyed. Naruto insists that he would surely find a way to subdue Sasuke while protecting Konoha. Itachi instills in Naruto a technique and hopes that the latter would never have a need for its use.
Kakashi, Gamabunta, and Gamakichi visit Naruto and relays that the head toad, Fukasaku, wants to see him. Naruto goes to the Hokage’s office to meet Fukasaku amongst other toads. Fukasaku tells Naruto that Jiraiya has been killed by Pain after infiltrating the land of the Rain. Naruto is despondent and blames Tsunade for his teacher’s death. Naruto stroms out Tsunade’s office and is later comforted by Iruka and Shikamaru.

Jiraiya's dying message

Fukasaku presents a code that is left by Jiraiya as he dies. Since Naruto has spent a great deal of time training with the Pervy Sage, he is asked to help Shikamaru to decode Jiraiya’s message. Naruto realizes that the key lies in Jiraiya’s novels and solves the code. However, the result is still baffling the decoders. Jiraiya could have meant, “The real one is not there” or “The real one does not exist.” Fukasaku knows it has to do with Pain. However, he does not know the significance of the message.
Meanwhile, Ibiki,the master interrogator, is questioning the Rain ninja that Jiraiya has sent back. Concurrently, Shizune is performing an autopsy on a Pain body that Jiraiya has arranged for its delivery to Konoha. Ibiki and Shizune are trying to piece together the puzzle that is Pain.
Naruto declares that he is going to avenge for Jiraiya. However, Fukasaku replies that Jiraiya has been the only person capable of beating Pain. The Great Toad Sage adds, at Naruto’s current state, he is only going to meet his death, unless he trains in senjutsu, as his teacher has done. When Naruto asks if he is going to be powerful enough to defeat Pain, Fukasaku responds that it is entirely up to Naruto.

Mount Myouboku

Due to the urgency of the matter, instead of the usual route, which requires a month of taking labyrinth-like paths, Naruto and Fukasaku are reverse summoned by Gamabunta. At Mount Myouboku, Naruto trains in senjutsu with Fukasaku. Naruto is quickly introduced to the definition and applications of senjutsu—a technique that allows the wielder to become one with nature, thus be able to harness the powers in it and convert into usable chakra, which increases one’s taijutsu and genjutsu greatly. Fukasaku demonstrates such increases in power by lifting a statue of far greater size and mass than himself. He warns that the training is difficult and there is a real danger that Naruto may die. Fukasaku further cautions that there is also another possibility where Naruto may cease to exist as a human being. Nevertheless, Naruto insists on training.

Naruto, Fukasaku, & the Frog Oil

The Senjutsu training usually takes a long time to learn. However, since Naruto is in a rush, Fukasaku introduces Naruto to the Frog Oil, which forcefully draws chakra from nature into Naruto. In turn, the oil quickens the process of having Naruto to do it all by himself. However, the risk of accruing excessive natural energy is that Naruto will turn into a permanent frog. Therefore, Fukasaku has to stand guard and hit Naruto with a special stick, which dissipates the natural energy and turns Naruto back to normal.

Balancing the natural, physical, & spiritual chakras

The Great Toad Sage explains that Naruto must be able to balance just the right amount of natural, physical, and spiritual chakra to blend into senjutsu chakra. For the perfect balance of the three chakras enables the user to utilize natural energy while maintaining one’s current state at will. Therefore, Naruto must be extremely cautious in maintaining a delicate balance of the three chakras, for too little natural energy has no effect, and too much of it will turn Naruto into a permanent frog. Naruto learns that even the Pervy Sage retains some frog features while in sage mode. However, Fakasaku adds that hundreds have failed at mastering senjutsu, therefore, what Jiraiya has done is a remarkable achievement.

Naruto in Sage Mode

Naruto decides to not be fearful of the consequences and simply train and master the senjutsu. He declares that Jiraiya’s way of the ninja will also be his way. Naruto decides to speed up his training using his shadow clones to mzximize experiences gained while minimizing time spent, as he has done with learning the Rasenshuriken.
However, Fukasaku cautions that if any of the clones were to unsuccessfully balance the natural chakra, Naruto will also suffer the same consequences. Fukasaku informs Naruto that only gutsy people like himself and Jirayia had the capability to even feel natural energy. In addition, only people with vast chakra like Naruto and Jiraiya could even hope to use senjutsu. This gets Naruto fired up and he jumps into the of Frog Oil pond and covers himself entirely with the oil. After intensive training on balancing natural chakra with the assistance of the Frog Oil, Naruto is able to transform into senjutsu mode, however, with some frog characteristics. Fukasaku states that it is time for Naruto to train without the Toad Oil. Nevertheless, before that, he hands Naruto the first book Jiraiya has written, and informs that Naruto now holds the heart of Jiraiya in his hands. Naruto is moved to tears when he reads the novel.
Naruto wondered at the necessity of training the senjutsu when there exists the Frog Oil. The Great Taod Sage explains that the Toad Oil is only usable in Mount Myouboku. Once it leaves the frogs’ world, it will evaporate quickly. Therefore, Fukasaku concludes, Naruto needs to master the senjutsu, if he is going to have any chance of defeating Pain.

Naruto in Sage Mode

Naruto continues to train with Fukasaku, who asks Naruto to remain still by balancing on a platform that is both set high in the air and surrounded by spikes. In the beginning, Fukasaku has had to save Naruto from certain death many times with his tongue. Eventually, Naruto learns to maintain the proper balance to transform into sage mode. In addition, he maintains almost all of his human form, except for a toad-like appearance in his eyes, as a result of this transformation.
When Naruto masters the sage mode, as he fell from the platform when a bird has landed on his shoulder, he is unharmed even after falling into a spike. Fukasaku deems that Naruto has completed his training of senjutsu. The Great Toad Sage shows Naruto some combat maneuvers in sage mode. While Fukasaku sleeps, Naruto continues his training.
To increase the survival rate of his student during battles, Fukasaku informs the trainee of the limits of senjutsu. The sage mode requires one to stay still to absorb the natural energy while balancing the three chakras. After transforming successfully into sage mode, Naruto will be able to use it for a few minutes, until the natural energy reserve runs out. It is most certainly dangerous to stop and reabsorb the natural energy during battle, since standing still makes easy targets.

Fukasaku & Naruto attempting to merge

To ensure a constant stream of natural energy supply during battle, Fukasaku proposes the solution of merging with Naruto temporarily and acting as a conductor to collect natural energy into the trainee’s body. Naruto learns that Jiraiya has used the same strategy during battle. However, the Kyuubi inside of Naruto repels Fukasaku. After unsuccessfully trying to gather natural energy while moving,, Naruto has to come up with his own solution for maintaining in sage mode during battles.

Naruto is ready for battle

Fukasaku and Naruto finds out that the messenger toad sent to Konoha has died. Fukasaku asks Shima, who is near Konoha at the moment, to summon them there, via another messenger frog. Fukasaku and Naruto are summoned, along with Gamabunta, Gamakichi, Gamaken, and Gamasushi. Meanwhile, Pain is wreaking havoc in Konoha. He has unleashed his ultimate Shinra Tensei. Naruto arrives Konoha, finding that most of his friends are either severely injured or already at the brink of death. Tsunade is also fighting in her weakened state against Pain, who attacks with the resurrected Asura Realm, which Naruto destroys with a single blow.
At the defeat of Asura Path, Naruto calls Gamakichi to take Tsunade to safety at the toad’s arrival. Naruto asks Taunade to take her leave and let Naruto deal with Pain. He also asks her to inform the villagers to stay out of his way during the battle with Pain. Tsunade leaves Katsuyu to stay with Naruto so that he can receive updated information on Konoha and its shinobis. Naruto, concerned at his inability to sense Kakashi’s chakra, inquires about his whereabouts. Naruto understands Tsunade’s silence as the unfortunate news of his death. Naruto sends Gamakichi away while keeping Fukasaku and Shima with him.

Oodama Rasengan 大玉螺旋丸

As Gamakichi takes Tsunade to safety, Animal Path (畜生道 Chikushoudou) launches her assault against Naruto with summons of a Giant Rhino. The rhino charges at Naruto, intending to crush and impale him. Naruto effortlessly stops the rhino by the horn and hurls it over his shoulder. Animal Path responds by summoning a dog and bull. Fukasaku and Shima help Naruto by singing a Sage Frog Song duet. Naruto rushes at the dog and bull. With his shadow clones, Naruto prepares a rasengan in each hand and gives them to his clones. Each of Naruto's clones usees a sage technique--the Oodama Rasengan (大玉螺旋丸)--and blasts the bull and dog summons away. As the rhino has met its end, the dog and bull fly into the waiting blades of Gamabunta and his toads.
As the next Preta Path (餓鬼道 Gakidou) rushes forward to face Naruto, Katsuyu informs Naruto that ninjustu are useless, as this Pain is able to absorb them all. Naruto takes the information in stride, confidently stating that he will simply use Frog Kata (蛙組手 Kawazu Kumite). As the Preta Pain attempts to stab Naruto with a hidden blade, Naruto dodges, aiming a punch at his face without physically making contact. The other Pains are suprised when their fellow is blasted backwards. Deva Path (天道 Tendou) comments on how it appears as he has deflected the blow.

Naruto vs. Preta Pain using Frog Kata

The Frog Kata allows Naruto to use the Natural Energy around him to enhance the range of his attacks. Naruto can then manipulate the energy at his will. Naruto stands alone against the remaining Pains, and prepares his new technique, readying to end the battle. Naruto creates two Shadow Clones, and with their help creates his Wind Release: Rasenshuriken, now completed, and faces off with the Pains.
Pain finally realizes that Naruto is using the same Hermit Mode (senjutsu) that Jiraiya has. Pain then reveals that he too, has been a student of Jiraiya's. Naruto is furious that someone who has trained under the the Pervy Sage could become as violent as Pain has, i.e., to the point of rejecting Jiraiya's teachings and even kill him. Naruto then shocks his opponents with the hurling of his jutsu.
While all the Pains initially successfully dodge the attacks, Naruto drastically expands its size of his jutsu to take down the Human Path. Animal Path summons a bird to ram into Naruto. It misses. Meanwhile, Gamabunta, Gamaken, and Gamahiro are busy dealing with the dogs that keep multiplying. Shima uses Dust Cloud to blind all of the Pains while Naruto works in combination with Gamabunta to take down Animal Path with a Twin Rasengan inside of Gamabunta's mouth. With Animal Path gone, the multiplying dog summon soon disperses.
Eventually, Naruto is depleted of nature chakra and can no longer sustain Hermit Mode. Naruto reverts to his normal state and is exhausted. Meanwhile, Deva Path springs at Naruto with his attacks. The two exchange blows in hand-to-hand combat. Naruto solves his gathering the natural energy without standing still by leaving his Shadow Clones back at Mount Myouboku using Hermit Mode (senjutsu). Fukasaku reverse summons them to allow Naruto to use senjutsu in Konoha and maintaining Hermit Mode.
Naruto breaks Deva Path's chakra spike and kicks Deva aside. Naruto then creats another Rasenshuriken and throws it at Deva. However, Preta Path reappears and absorbs all of Naruto's Rasenshuriken. Naruto realizes that Naraka Path (地獄道 Jigokudou) has revived Preta Path. Naruto redirects his Rasenshuriken to the ground to create a dirt cloud while throwing another one at Preta Path. The thrown Rasenshuriken transforms into a Naruto clone and tackles Preta Path. Therefore, allowing the real Rasenshuriken to hit Deva Path. Nevertheless, Deva Path's chakra regenerates and deflects Naruto's attack. Naruto then puts his elbow over Preta Path's face, while a Shadow Clone dives at Naraka Path with Twin Rasengan.
The Shadow Clone dives at Deva Path as Naruto is about to crush Preta Path's head. However, Deva pushes them back. Gamabunta, Gamaken, and Gamahiro leap in to help. Deva Path pushes the frogs away. During this time, Fukasaku tells Naruto to use a genjutsu, which Naruto replies that he cannot perform. As a result, Fukasaku and Shima volunteer. However, they need time to gather enough natural energy to prepare for the genjutsu. Deva pulls Naruto towards him as Preta Pain grabs Naruto to drain the natural energy from his body, returning him to his normal state. Shima and Fukasaku tell Naruto to hang on.
While being forced to remain still, Naruto starts to absorb natural energy and Hungry Ghost suffers "toad petrification," and literally, breaks free from his grip. Deva sees Fukasaku and Shima preparting their genjutsu and pulls Fukasaku towards himself and stabs him with his spike, then throws him at Naruto and then proceeds to slam Naruto into the ground and stab his hands. Pein goes on to compare Naruto's way and his own way of peace. Naruto is impaled to the ground by Pain's spike, while missing his vital organs, to limit Naruto's movement.

Naruto & the six tails of the Kyuubi

Hinata jumps in to protect Naruto from being taken by Pain. She confesses her love for Naruto. Pain stabs Hinata, therefore, infuriating Naruto to a level of rage he has never experienced before. He becomes engulfed by the power of the Kyuubi and reveals six tails. This time with a skeletal frame forming about him as well. Pain is unafraid since he feels that his own pain is a greater source of power and justification for his actions. Naruto overcomes the seals placed upon him by Yamato and turns his gravital attacks back onto Pain. Naruto is set on killing Pain with fox chakra gathered at his mouth. Pain pushes at Naruto to slightly detours his attack. Pain flees with Naruto doggedly chasing him across Konoha. The pair leave the village as Pain is prepares a secret attack.
Pain uses Chibaku Tensei, a technique that creates a black sphere which pulls anything with mass towards it. The six-tailed fox is trapped inside the ball of earth. The Kyuubi manipulates Naruto as the seal placed by the Fourth hokage starts to distort and Naruto turns into an eight-tailed fox. Just as Naruto is about to pull off the seal, the Fourth Hokage apppears and reveals that Naruto is his son. Nauro cries at learning this revelation. The Fourth Hokage brings Naruto to another place so the father and son can talk quietly without interruptions from the Kyuubi. Naruto punches him, saying that he is not sure if he is pissed off or happy and asks why the Fourth Hokage has sealed the Kyuubi inside of him. The Fourth Hokage answers by saying that he did it because he has believed that Naruto would be able to control and use the fox's power, since he is the Hokage's son.

Minato has faith in his son Naruto.

The Fourth Hokage reveals that there has been a powerful ninja who can control the Kyuubi--an Atsasuki member who wears a mask and cannot be defeated by Naruto without any special power. The Fourth Hokage follows by telling Naruto that he knows about Jiraiya's death and that pain is probably being used by the same guy wearing a mask. After that,the Fourth Hokage says that he believes Naruto can find the answers to peace himself and restores the distorted seals, adding that he would be meeting Naruto for the last time. The Fourth Hokage places his faith in Naruto as he fades away. Naruto returns to normal as the Kyuubi fades away.

Naruto defeats Pain with his Rasengan.

Naruto returns to Sage Mode and Chibaku Tensei starts to crumble due to the chakra strain on Nagato. Deva attacks Naruto with an arm spike, but Naruto broke off the spike and kicks Deva away. Naruto uses Rasenshuriken and throws a smoke bomb, Deva deflects it Another Rasenshuriken and rocks next to Deva turn out to be Shadow Clones, which try to hold Deva in place. However, Deva stabs them all and leaps out of the way. Suddenly, all the rocks around Deva turn out to be Shadow Clones and leap at Deva. Nevertheless, they are unable to go through with the action, since Deva pushes them away. Naruto has other Shadow Clones throw him and he rammed into Deva with the Rasengan. Naruto then stabbs himself with one of Pein's spikes to trace the source of the chakra signal to locate Nagato's hiding place. Naruto sets out for Nagato.

Samsara of Heavenly Technique

Naruto meets Nagato for the first time, face to face. Nagato and Naruto have an arguement about peace, hate and Jiraiya's belief. Naruto asks Nagato how he turned out this way, as an apprentice of Jiraiya. Nagato begins his story about his past and his first pain--the death of his parents. He narrates his life after Jiraiya has left them at the Hidden Village of the Rain to Naruto. Nagato also tells of how his childhood friend, Yahiko, has died. Finally Nagato explains his plan to save the world through pain. After hearing Nagato's story, Naruto agrees and empathizes with Nagato's pain. Naruto informs Nagato that he will not kill him, but states that he is determined to break the cycle of hatred to honor Jiraiya's wishes. Nagato is surprised and impressed with Naruto's resolve and determination. He believes that Naruto has what it takes to bring peace to the world of the ninjas. Nagato uses the last of his chakra to reverse the Samsara of Heavenly Technique and revives all the people in Konoha who have previously lost their lives. Nagato passes away, after depleting all of his chakra.

Konoha's villagers recognizing Naruto as a hero

Konan takes Nagato and Yahiko's body with her to return to Amegakure. Before taking her leave, Konan tells Naruto that she has quit the Akatsuki and will help Naruto find peace in the world. She gives Naruto a bonquet of folded-paper flowers, symbolizing their alliance. Later Kakashi carries the tired Naruto back to Konoha. Upon their return, Kakashi and Naruto were met by the entire village with a hero's welcome.

Five Kage Summit Arc

Tsunade remains unconscious after overexerting her chakra via Katsuyu to protect the villagers during the invasion of Pain. While Shizune and Sakura tend to her, Danzo is made Hokage in the meantime. Due to Sasuke's involvement in the Akatsuki, he is officially a rogue ninja. The Raikage and his countymen are also hunting Sasuke for injuring the former's younger brother, who happens to be a jinchuriki for the eight-tailed beast.

Naruto tries his best to save Sasuke by bringing him back to Konoha, which also fulfills his promise to Sakura. The five Kages, meanwhile, are bound to have a summit meeting in the land of the samurai, to discuss the fate of Sasuke and ways to deal with the Akatsuki. Naruto sets out with Kakashi and Yamato to meet with the Raikage. The Raikage refuses Naruto's plea and reasserts that he wishes to see Sasuke dead for the sake of his little brother.
Sasuke, also sets out towards the Five Kage Summit, with help from a fellow Akatsuki member--Zetsu--in search for Danzo. During the summit meeting, the five kages argue and point fingers at each other for military actions and relations with the Akatsuki. Raikage loses his temper during the meeting. Danzo fails to be names the sole kage in charge of all the military forces of the neutral nations. Zetsu appears in front of all the five kages and exposes Sasuke's presence at the land of the samurai. Raikage loses his temper again and strangulates Zetsu. Raikage clashes with Sasuke and his team.

Madara approaches Naruto

Madara approaches Naruto for a talk and is intervened by Yamato and Kakashi. Madara is about to reveal the hidden history of Konoha that involves the Itachi clan and the Hokages. Yamato restrains Madara while the latter speaks, preventing him from capturing Naruto and the Kyuubi inside him.

Abilities

At the beginning of the series the only jutsu that Naruto know is the Sexy Jutsu, a transformation jutsu which turns him into a naked lady shrouded in smoke clouds. Though he couldn't do the Clone Technique at the start he quickly learns the Multiple Shgadow Clone and the Shadow Clone Jutsu, a stronger clone jutsu that lets the clones become physical. This is a jounin level jutsus. Through the show and manga this is his most commonly used jutsus.

With the help of the Shadow Clone Jutsu he can use the Rasengan, which is a spiraling sphere of energy which he thrusts at the opponent.With help from Kakashi he can create the Wind Release Rasengan. This combines his elemental chakra which is wind with the Rasengan. For this he uses two Shadow Clones, one for the Rasengan and one for his elemental chakra. In Naruto: Shippuden (Part ll) he develops a stronger version called the Great Spiraling Sphere or Great Rasengan. When in one tailed demon fox form he can perform the Rasengan with one hand with the help of the demon fox's chakra

In Part ll Naruto an creat the Wind Release: Spiraling Shuriken. He mixes his wind based chakra along with the Rasengan. But he shapes the wind chakra to form a four-pointed shuriken. Even though it looks like a shuriken it can't be thrown like one. It needs to be at point blank range to hit. When it's succesful the victim is trapped in a spiraling dome of wind chakra and is attack by small blades that can hit on a cellular level.

Later on Jiraiya teaches him a toad summoning Jutsu. With a small sacrifice blood he can summon a toad. Becausee of his poor chakra control he can summon the toad he wants at will Gamakichi, Gamatatsu, or the gigantic Gamabunta are the ones he usually summons. As the toads have minds of their own, Naruto has difficulty controlling them, meaning that they typically have to become motivated to fight on their own. Naruto has come quite far in his skills as a ninja, while still technically a Genin he has the skill of an "S" ranked Ninja. He also has enough skill to pass on his knowledge, training Konohamaru in the use of Rasengan much as Jiraiya trained him.

Shadow Clone Jutsu

This jutsu enables Naruto to create clones of himself. However,the clones are solid and can touch or hit things unlike the clone technique. These clones normally dispel after one or two hits. Naruto normally uses the clones for decoy or to attacks his enemies to tire them out. The clones can concentrate and gather natural energy which Naruto can dispel in a battle so that he can enter sage mode. In part 2, Naruto becomes more proficient with this technique, using it push himself out of the way of an attack, transform into weapons, and fall for traps in his place.

Summoning Jutsu

Naruto is able to summon large or small toads to use in battle after he signed the toad contract. At first, he was unable to controll the toads he summoned but nowadays,he seemed to be able to control them to a greater extent. He can summon Gamabunta, a large toad with a large sword.

Sage Mode

Sage Mode Naruto.

During sage mode, his strength, speed and durability is enhanced. If Naruto draws in too much natural energy, he will become a frog. His jutsu attacks also become much more powerful than before. However, he cannot stay in sage mode for too long. Recently, he managed to use cones to gather natural energy while he battled. Once he ran out of senjutsu chakra, he uses a summoning scroll to summon and dispel his clone so that he can restore his seijutsu Chakra.

Sexy Harem Jutsu

This jutsu combines both the sexy jutsu technique and the clone technique to create a lot of clones of beautiful and sexy women.

Different Chakra Forms of the Kyuubi Power

Naruto throughout the series has shwon great display of being able to manipulate his chakra level from the lowest of the low to the highest of the high, if not at will. One of the things that makes Naruto such a fighter to be head and shoulders above the rest (in the Part II continuity at least, not the time period when he was a child, as he failed almost everything he tried to succeed in) is the Fourth Hokage's legend, the nine tailed fox, Kyuubi, sealed within him. Kyuubi, at time of need, offers his powers to Naruto in a slight amount, due to the fact that if Naruto were to die, then he would die with him. Later on the series Naruto is able to (with his master Jiraiya's training) manipulate the foxes energies to some extent, making him a near unbeatable foe when it come to fighting.

Two different forms of chakra for 0 tail Naruto. The first stage that has been shown is the more bestial stage then the other form. In this form Narutos' whiskers became longer, darker and more noticeable. His nails grow longer. His teeth start growing fangs and become longer. His jaw is widened. All of his previously injuries are healed at a remarkable rate. He also gets a power boost in this form. His speed, strength, agility, charka, etc are all increase. Narutos' eyes also become red and the pupils become narrower like an fox. In this form Naruto is in full control but he is shown to be a lot more feral and animal like. He once usually travels on all fours. It appears that this charka is triggered by rage, but is later accesed when Naruto wants the fox's chakra.The other version is when Naruto actual goes to the Kyuubi in his body. Naruto demands the kyuubi to give him his charka which he calls "Rent" for the kyuubi staying in his body. The kyuubi gives Naruto his charka out of respect for his courage to talk to him like that. Naruto body doesn't change at all but a red charka flows around his body like DBZ. He gets a power boost but its hasn't been said which one of these forms are more powerful.

One-tailed Form

1 Tail Form

This is the form after 0 tail form. This form is more powerful the previous form. Naruto has a lot of the qualities of the last form but this makes him looks more like the kyuubi then the previous form. His body is engulfed with chakra that takes the form of a fox. The chakra that engulfs him appears to protect him from damage. That may be true but it also puts constant damage to Naruto body. So he fights while being constantly hurt and constantly healing at the same time. He is able to shoot a chakra hand that extends from the chakra that is surrounding naruto. He is also able to perform Rasengan with the help of the chakra. Naruto is still in control in this form.

Two-tailed Form

2 Tails Form

In this form Naruto has all the same abilities as the last. But of course he is more powerful. He looks more monstrous then before. His eyes are widened and the outside of eyes become black. His teeth become sharper and longer. His mouth becomes black too. He has two tails in this form. And the Kyuubi is more noticeable in this form. You see more similarities between the two in this form. Naruto still is in control in this form.

Three-tailed Form

3 Tails Form

This form is more powerful then the last and Naruto has the hardest time keeping in control. He could lose control at any moment in this form. In this form the chakra bubbles a lot more then the last ones. He is able to counter a lot of his opponent’s attacks by roaring. In this form he has 3 tails.

Four-tailed Form

4 Tails Form

This is the latest form we have seen in the Naruto Universe. It is the most powerful out of all the other versions. In this form Naruto body is completely tared off of his body and the Kyuubi Chakra acts like a skin and mixes with naruto blood. In this form it has been stated that he is miniature kyuubi. Naruto has absolute no control in this form. Naruto is able to all the same abilities as the last couple of forms but it appears to be harder for Naruto to move in this form. In this form just a swing of his arm can create destructive effects or a simply roar. He was able to create a ball of chakra and swallow it and fire it with explosive effects. Not only is this form Naruto most powerful it is also his most dangerous to himself form. Apparently this form can shorten Naruto Lifespan. While in this form every one of Naruto cells are being destroyed. But more cells are being created at the same time. The human body has a limit to the amount of cells that they can produce in their lifespan. If Naruto continues to go into this form his lifespan will be shorten.

It has been reviled that Naruto only have the yang(light) side of the Ninetails soul locked away in him. It unknow where the yin(dark) half of the Ninetails is, it is speculated that that may be the part that the Fourth sealed away when he gave his soul to the Death God.

Six-tailed Form

6 Tails Form

After pein almost killed Hintata, Naruto turns into a six-tailed mini- kyuubi.This is the most powerful version so far,even more than the four-tailed kyubbi.It looks like the four-tailed kyuubi but it has seemingly bones covering its body in some parts. Unlike the other forms this six tailed Naruto can break the seal used in the First Hokage's necklace. He can also within gravital forces and use them to his advantage.

Eight-tailed Form

8 Tails Form

The Eight-Tailed Transformation is the hifghest transformation Naruto can make so far. However, he only misses the fur, the nineth tale and the additional powers from the transformation higher than this. Naruto feels intense pain during this transformation and would destroy anything that would hurt him. Its power is intensely unparalleled as it can break Pain's Chibaku Tensei. An image of his father appeared in his mind to stop him from losing total control and to stop the Kyuubi from taking over his mind. However, his father said that it would be the last time that he will repower the seal for Naruto to stop the Kyuubi.

Nine-Tailed Form

9 Tails Form

Naruto made a failed attempt to transform into a Nine-tails version of the fox, but this ended in failure. Naruto was attempting to take on this form to use a special attack called the Bijuu Bomb. This can only be performed once the human vessel has bonded the chakra of the Bijuu with their own. While they should appear to be the beast, the user will have complete control and access to the attack. One of the possible explanations for the failure is due to the Nine-tailed Fox's hostility toward Naruto.

The technique was abandoned after it was discovered to be pointless to explore any further. The technique of the Bijuu Bomb is identical to Naruto's Rasengan. He would only have to train to use the Rasengan using the Nine-Tails Chakra Form he obtained while bonding his chakra with the Nine-tails.

After much heavy training to bring the Nine-tailed Fox under his control. Naruto was finally able to tame the beast and meld the charka together. He was trained for this by a fellow Jinchuuriki named Killer Bee.
